Metzger’s starts its own Crusade

Most everyone is familiar with the charitable work of fire departments across the state raising money for the WHAS Crusade For Children.

And as the Crusade ramps up for the 60th time this year for its event June 1-2, the organization has set an ambitious goal of $6 million for its diamond anniversary.

Firefighters collect about 50 percent of the funds through different events and roadside collections, but where does the other half come from?

Well, one business in Shelby County is getting into the act.

Beshear approves exchange to expand health insurance

Calling it “the single-most important decision in our lifetime for improving the health of Kentuckians,” Gov. Steve Beshear on Thursday announced the inclusion of 308,000 more Kentuckians in the federal Medicaid health insurance program.

Beshear said announcing the expansion that, together with the creation of the Health Benefit Exchange, this would ensure that every Kentuckian will have access to affordable health insurance.

Business Q&A: Libby Adams

The Shelby County Industrial & Development recently held a long-range planning session led by Greg Coker to develop its long-range plans and set a course. This is the first such session since 2005. Libby Adams, 55, a native of Shelby County, has been with the foundation since August 1992 and has been its executive director since 2003, serving with CEO Bobby Hudson in developing industrial properties and luring manufacturers to the county. She took a few moments to discuss the planning session and the state of the industrial base in the county.

 

Fluid spill shuts down Midland Industrial

A fluid spill at the intersection of Freedom’s Way and Midland Industrial Dr. on Monday morning shut down Midland Industrial and Haven Hill Road until late afternoon while crews cleaned the mess up, officials said.

Emergency Management Agency Director Paul Whitman said a truck carrying a 55-gallon drum of hydraulic fluid to a plant in the industrial park lost the drum just after turning onto Midland Industrial from the bypass at about 11:30 a.m.

WKU’s offer lifts Farris

Collins junior Dre Farris, a standout football player for the Titans, said Monday’s grant offer from Western Kentucky University was part affirmation, part realization.

“It’s a stress reliever really,” he said Wednesday. “Playing Division One has been my dream since I was a little boy, and now I know I’ll have a chance to do that.”

And even, though, Farris isn’t going to cast his lot with a certain college or university any time soon, he said that just knowing he would have that opportunity is comforting.

Hornback optimistic for federal hemp changes

After helping lead the charge for policy change on industrial hemp in Kentucky, state Sen. Paul Hornback (R-Shelbyville) took his campaign to Washington D.C., last week, and returned expressing optimism about what he heard there.

 “It went really well,” he said of the trip. “Of course we met with all of our congressional representatives and also with representatives from the Department of Energy, Department of Agriculture and [the] Obama administration. The lady we met with at the Department of Energy was actually even wearing a hemp dress.”

The cool spring has finally ushered in May flowers! I love cut flowers from the garden. There is a simple, happy satisfaction that comes from picking a bundle of peonies for the kitchen work table. Just be sure to shake the ants off first. The other thing about a cool spring with adequate rain fall is that the weather is acting as a sort of preservative: all those beautiful blooms are lasting much longer than normal.

Schools name teacher Allan to replace Duanne Puckett

Ryan Allan, who has used his marketing skills to sell industrial products and his passion for education to teach children, will get a chance to use both in his new role as the public relations coordinator for Shelby County Public Schools. Allan was named to replace Duanne Puckett, who is retiring May 31.

Superintendent James Neihof is excited to have Allan, a third-grade teacher at Clear Creek Elementary, join the administrative team at school district’s central office.

Decrying NBC’s comments

 

General Electric Corp. Declares Homosexuality to be a "good thang." G.E. spokesman Matt Liar on NBC’s Today Show announced how wonderful an event that Jason Collins is "gay." Jason is a player in the NBA (never heard of him). He is apparently cut in the same mold as that creep Dennis Rodman and Kobe Bryant, not to mention O.J. All of these folks are terribly overpaid social pukes, including Matt.
