Collins students send care package

Students from Collins High School collected items for care packages to Pvt. II Joshua Whittle and his platoon in Afghanistan with the National Guards. Whittle graduated from CHS last year. Bekaert Corp. in Shelbyville became involved by being a community partner with the PLTW (Project Lead The Way) engineering program, in which Whittle took three classes. Bakaert will sponsor the senior service project by providing help during the event as well as providing pizzas for the senior celebration afterward.

Shelby County Fiscal Court: Vigo, Back Creek to be resurfaced

Funding has been allocated to repave Vigo Road and Back Creek Road, the top two projects this summer in a state-funded annual program.
Shelby County Fiscal Court magistrates voted unanimously Tuesday night to approve recommendations made for the Transportation  Cabinet’s 2013-14 Rural Secondary Road Program for Shelby County.

Transportation Chief District Engineer Matt Bullock was on hand at the meeting to outline the plan.

Men’s Health Fair

expects large turnout

About 300 men are expected Saturday to take part in Jewish Hospital Shelbyville’s 13th annual Men’s Health Fair, which is from 8 a.m. to noon at the hospital, at 727 Hospital Drive.

Free screenings include cholesterol, glucose, blood pressure, oral cancer screening, skin cancer screening and the PSA (prostate specific antigen) – a screening to detect prostate cancer in men. The screenings are valued at about $1,400.

Shelby student to attend KFB ag leadership program

Briana Fellows of Shelby County was one of 94 high school juniors from 60 counties who will attend the Kentucky Farm Bureau’s 28th annual Institute for Future Agricultural Leaders, which will be held in two locations this month.

Fellows will attend the session June 16-20 at Murray State University. The second is a week later at the University of Kentucky.

A Shelbyville woman may have saved a puppy recently from a horrible death from a condition that includes hemorrhaging, with blood streaming from its eyes, nose or other body cavities.

No, it’s not some rare disease, but simply heat stroke from being left in a parked car in bright sunlight.

On a visit to Kroger in late April, on her way into the store, Dawn Hanaway said she saw a puppy locked in a car with the windows cracked about two inches.

Todd P. Lowe, a resident of Simpsonville, has been honored by the organization that sets the standards for the international investment industry.

Lowe, president and founder of Parthenon LLC of Louisville, was among six investment professionals honored by CFA Institute for their contributions to the industry and the organization.

Garbage still on the table for Shelbyville

The Shelbyville City Council remains interested in pursuing information on curbside trash and recycling for residents despite the county’s decision to step away from the concept.

Shelbyville Mayor Tom Hardesty said last week he will continue to investigate the idea and said the council has seemed interested in continuing on without the county.

“It’s definitely still on the table for us, and we’re interested in looking into it further,” he said.
