Shelbyville Police Reports June 5, 2013

DUI

Janet Long, 40, of 1712 Dew St. in New Albany, Ind., was arrested May 31 on I-64 was charged with operating a motor vehicle under aggravating circumstances, first offense, driving on a DUI suspended license, giving a false name or address to an office and leaving the scene of an accident. She was also served with Franklin and Jefferson County warrants for unstated charges.

Simpsonville sidewalk bids may be considered on June 19

For nearly five years the Simpsonville City Commission has been sitting on ready to get its spiffy downtown sidewalks constructed and open for the public’s feet.

That feat may be a bit closer by the end of this month, because commissioners hope soon to entertain and let bids for the final contracts on the project.

Todd P. Lowe, a resident of Simpsonville, has been honored by the organization that sets the standards for the international investment industry.

Lowe, president and founder of Parthenon LLC of Louisville, was among six investment professionals honored by CFA Institute for their contributions to the industry and the organization.

Brown fails to make U.S. Open cut

Brandon Brown failed to make the cut at the U.S. Open.

The professional golfer from Shelbyville shot a 12-over-par 152 in the first two rounds of the tournament being held at Merion Golf Club in Ardmore, Penn.

Brown, making his first appearance in one of golf’s four “majors,” missed the cut for the final two rounds by four shots.

Shelby County Fiscal Court: Vigo, Back Creek to be resurfaced

Funding has been allocated to repave Vigo Road and Back Creek Road, the top two projects this summer in a state-funded annual program.
Shelby County Fiscal Court magistrates voted unanimously Tuesday night to approve recommendations made for the Transportation  Cabinet’s 2013-14 Rural Secondary Road Program for Shelby County.

Transportation Chief District Engineer Matt Bullock was on hand at the meeting to outline the plan.

Men’s Health Fair

expects large turnout

About 300 men are expected Saturday to take part in Jewish Hospital Shelbyville’s 13th annual Men’s Health Fair, which is from 8 a.m. to noon at the hospital, at 727 Hospital Drive.

Free screenings include cholesterol, glucose, blood pressure, oral cancer screening, skin cancer screening and the PSA (prostate specific antigen) – a screening to detect prostate cancer in men. The screenings are valued at about $1,400.

Semipro football team kicks off at Daniel Field

The Kentucky Storm, a first-year semipro football team that is based in Henry County, will play its home games this summer at Daniel Field in Shelbyville. The team’s home-opener is Saturday night.

The Storm will host the Kentucky Wolverines at 6 o’clock. Admission is $8, and children 6 and under are free.

“It’s pretty good entertainment for a Saturday night,” Storm Coach, President & CEO Richard Smith said.

The Storm won its season-opener last Saturday night, beating the Owensboro Wildcats, 38-0.

Shelby County Magistrate Ruble won’t seek 4th term

Allen Ruble, who has served on Shelby County Fiscal Court for three terms, won’t be seeking re-election in 2014.

Ruble, a Republican whose District 3 is north of Shelbyville, made the announcement at Tuesday night’s meeting of the Shelby County Fiscal Court.

“After much thought and prayer, I have decided not to run again when this term is up,” Ruble said in a prepared statement. “At the end of my present term, it will have been honor and privilege to have served as third district magistrate for twelve years.”

151st Shelby County Fair opens Thursday

Only a few more days to go until Shelby’s 151st county fair opens with a roar – and a moo – on Thursday as the dairy show kicks things off. But there will be plenty of attractions for all, including a tractor pull, carnival rides and pageants.

And it only gets better from there, with the usual yummy treats, music, and so many events and attractions it would next to impossible to get bored.

Animal lovers will be in their element, with plenty of shows for goats, horses, sheep and hogs and even a cow and calf contest contest.
