School board to look at MAP scores

The final round of MAP testing scores for the past school year will be reviewed by the Shelby County School Board on Thursday night.

Deputy Superintendent Lisa Smith will present the scores to the board, for a spring-to-spring comparison as an indication of how students have progressed in their academic year.

WHAT WE THINK: Shelby County's outlet mall needs to succeed

The spats and the horror now can be put behind us, and it’s time for all of us to unite and focus on the next big thing in our community:
An outlet mall is being built in Simpsonville.

That’s not news, we realize – certainly not to those homeowners who will live in proximity to this 374,000-square-foot enterprise – but the truth of the matter is that the opening next year of the Outlet Shoppes of Louisville creates an important milestone in the evolution of our Shelby County.

WE CONGRATULATE: Duanne Puckett on her well-earned retirement

Duanne Puckett may have retired last week from her role in publicizing Shelby County Public Schools – sort of her second retirement after leaving the leadership position of this newspaper in 1998 – but she won’t be retiring from the role of a lifetime.

That’s because Ms. Puckett, for all her accomplishments – she is a member of the University of Kentucky Journalism Hall of Fame, among dozens of other stellar achievements – is a role model.

151st Shelby County Fair: Final fair preparations underway

The 151st Shelby County Fair is rearing up and almost ready to go, and some final preparations to rides and vendors were being made Tuesday morning.

The Shelby County Extension Office spent more than two hours setting up the area inside the livestock facility, where many of the animal shows, including the first official event of the fair, the District Dairy Show, will be held.

What they are most excited about? A solution to the “poop problem.”

Cards need to keep foot down

To me the most significant statement at last Thursday’s Cardinal Caravan stop at the Shelby County Fairgrounds wasn’t the proclamations of Shelbyville’s own Antonita Slaughter and Chane Behanan that the University of Louisville’s men’s and women’s basketball teams would win national championships next season (what else are they supposed to say at the fan-driven event?).

Art Fest added to Jubilee lineup

An inaugural Art Fest this year will join the lineup for the annual Shelbyville Horse Show Jubilee, which will be July 25-27.

The Art Fest we be on the afternoon/evening of July 27 in downtown Shelbyville, along with the downtown car show, the Street Party concert and Chalk Fest for children. Shelby County Community Theatre will offer its summer musical, South Pacific, and The Gallery is open on Main Street.

The University of Louisville’s “Cardinal Caravan” will make its final stop at 6 p.m. Thursday at the pavilion at the Shelby County Fairgrounds.

UofL coaches, student-athletes and athletic staff members will be in attendance when the Caravan concludes its five-stop, three-day tour tomorrow.
