Shelby County School Board: High schools delayed by testing problem

End-of-the-year testing at Shelby County Public Schools’ two high schools has been interrupted slightly because of issues with ACT’s issuing of the state’s end-of-course assessments.

Hornback optimistic for federal hemp changes

After helping lead the charge for policy change on industrial hemp in Kentucky, state Sen. Paul Hornback (R-Shelbyville) took his campaign to Washington D.C., last week, and returned expressing optimism about what he heard there.

 “It went really well,” he said of the trip. “Of course we met with all of our congressional representatives and also with representatives from the Department of Energy, Department of Agriculture and [the] Obama administration. The lady we met with at the Department of Energy was actually even wearing a hemp dress.”

Memorial jazz concert

Former students of three of Shelby County’s musical teachers perform at the Ernie Threlkeld/Susie Saunders/Mel Owen Memorial Jam on Saturday in Mike Casey Gymnasium at Shelby County High School. The session also included ensemble groups from Collins High School and SCHS and benefitted those schools’ music programs.

Jasper honors Bailey’s Auto as its top shop in Kentucky

Roy Bailey, owner of Bailey’s Service Center is Shelbyville, has been honored by Jasper Engines & Transmission as the company’s No. 1 automotive repair shop in Kentucky.

Casey Hanlon of Jasper was in Shelbyville recently to present the award to Bailey, whose garage had installed more of Jasper’s engines and transmissions than any other independent shop in Kentucky for four consecutive years.

KY 55 to be reduced to 1 lane at I-64

Next week traffic may be backed up a bit on KY 55 at the I-64 interchange when roadwork is expected to intensify.
Officials at the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet say that KY 55 will be reduced to one lane between I-64 and Breighton Boulevard beginning at 7 a.m. Tuesday and, weather permitting, finishing at 7 p.m. Friday.

Andrea Clifford, spokesperson for the Transportation Cabinet, said the work will involve paving.

Blood drives in Shelby County will be from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday at Whitney M. Young Jr. Job Corps Center, 8460 Shelbyville Road in Simpsonville; noon to 4 p.m. on Saturday at Walmart, 500 Taylorsville Road; and from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. on May 13 at Simpsonville Baptist Church, 7208 Shelbyville Road.

Shelby County School Board: Students tabbed for TIP at Duke to be celebrated

The Shelby County Board of Education will recognize students who have qualified for the Duke Talent Identification Program (TIP) during Thursday’s regular meeting, which will be at Heritage Elementary School, 8300 Frankfort Road.

Engineering expo

Students from Shelby County High School, Collins High School and West and East Middle schools took part in the University of Louisville Engineering Expo in March. Students entered competition in bridge building, water bottle rockets, and Rube Goldberg machines. The Rube Goldberg machine competition required students to build a machine to pop a balloon that used at least two simple machines and at least five steps. The team from Collins High School won the best construction award for their balsa wood bridge in the high school competition.

Simpsonville pays off project phase, passes along LED request

Issues involving the downtown Village Center District in Simpsonville – at least changes involving those long-range plans – dominated the discussion at Tuesday’s meeting of the Simpsonville City Commission.

Commissioners voted to close out payment for the first phase of the sidewalk project for the downtown corridor and also approved on first reading a text amendment for a zone change for that corridor to allow for moderately sized LED signs.
