Storm-water runoff could be drain on Shelbyville

The city of Shelbyville is under the microscope for the rainwater that bounces off the pavement in your driveway, skitters across your fertilized lawn and disappears untreated into the storm drain at the low point of your cul de sac.

And City Public Works Director Jennifer Herrell is tasked with making darn sure you know that every drop of runoff water is being monitored by the federal and state governments and the city is liable for how clean it might be.

MY WORD: ‘Miss Bug’ spotlights a final student

When I visited the Education Center @ Cropper on May 2, I chatted with a junior, Jose Menendez, about the online algebra course he was taking. He switched gears and reminded me that we first met when he was a student at Painted Stone Elementary. He vividly remembered the history lesson I shared about the Painted Stone settlement and even the rock painted red that I brought with me.

“You’re ‘Miss Bug,’ right?” he asked.

He was right.

An overpowering storm of fear

Tell the truth: If you are a parent, you thought twice about sending your child to school on Tuesday morning.

You looked at the satellite images of the approaching weather system that had laid waste to miles and miles of homes in Oklahoma. You looked at the darkening skies in the west. You thought about families whose children were huddled in a school not built to withstand the right cross from nature’s most fearsome force.

No-till approach becoming the norm for farmers

It’s that time of year again, when farmers are out in their fields planting their crops.

And for most crop farmers – tobacco being the exception – a method known as “no-till planting” is used increasingly.

Instead of “digging up” the ground to plant the coming year’s seed, planting machines make a narrow initial slice in the ground, drop the seed in and then close the slice up again.

Rockets miss when they need some hits

Tuesday night’s 30th District Tournament semifinal between the Shelby County and Spencer County baseball teams came down to one hit.

The Bears got the big one they needed, but the Rockets never did, as Spencer County ended Shelby County’s season with a 4-2 victory at the Shelby County Athletic Complex.  

Josh Ferency’s 3-run double in the second inning was the difference as the third-seeded Bears advanced to Wednesday night’s district final against Collins.

Hornback rated legislative ‘MVP’ by state chamber

State Sen. Paul Hornback (R-Shelbyville) was among 12 legislators the Kentucky Chamber of Commerce named to with its second annual Chamber MVP Award.

The legislators, who were recognized for their conspicuous actions during the 2013 Kentucky General Assembly to support Kentucky’s business community, were given a commemorative Louisville Slugger bat.

Corn, soybean crops late

Shelby County farmers anticipating more rain in the coming days are scurrying to get out their corn and soybean crops already delayed by an extremely wet streak.

Some were working late into the night and early morning to plant corn and try to clear one crop and place the other.
Farmer Ray Tucker posted on his Facebook page Thursday that he had planted corn until 3 a.m. and was planning to get at soybeans starting at 5.

Shelby County Fiscal Court: First reading of county budget postponed until next week

The first reading of Shelby County’s budget was postponed because magistrates have not had a chance to review it, county officials said.

County Judge-Executive Rob Rothenburger said at Tuesday’s meeting of the Shelby County Fiscal Court that since magistrates have not conducted a budget workshop, the first reading, which was supposed to have been Tuesday, would be moved to a special called meeting next week.
