Legion team opens state title defense

The Shelbyville American Legion Post 37 baseball team will begin defense of its state title this week.

Post 37 will kick off its season with its 33rd annual Shelbyville American Legion Invitational Tournament, which will take place Thursday through Sunday at Bobby Stratton Field at Clear Creek Park.

Post 37 captured its sixth state championship last summer, but lost a handful of players from that squad.

Cards need to keep foot down

To me the most significant statement at last Thursday’s Cardinal Caravan stop at the Shelby County Fairgrounds wasn’t the proclamations of Shelbyville’s own Antonita Slaughter and Chane Behanan that the University of Louisville’s men’s and women’s basketball teams would win national championships next season (what else are they supposed to say at the fan-driven event?).

Art Fest added to Jubilee lineup

An inaugural Art Fest this year will join the lineup for the annual Shelbyville Horse Show Jubilee, which will be July 25-27.

The Art Fest we be on the afternoon/evening of July 27 in downtown Shelbyville, along with the downtown car show, the Street Party concert and Chalk Fest for children. Shelby County Community Theatre will offer its summer musical, South Pacific, and The Gallery is open on Main Street.

Armed Forces: Phoebus

Matthew Phoebus, a graduate of Shelby County High School, was promoted to staff sergeant in the U.S. Army.

SSgt Phoebus is assigned to the 1/32nd Cavalry in the 101st Air Assault Division at Fort Campbell.

The son of Chris and Brenda Phoebus, he is serving his second tour in Afghanistan.

CHARLTON: In the beginning, there was love

As I sat down to work on my first Sentinel-News column, I began by making a list of possible topics. It didn’t take long to compile a rather lengthy list. As I pared the list to a few ideas that seemed most timely, it occurred to me that I should first present the perspective from which I write.

I am a minister, so I will naturally take an interest in the way that faith intersects with the various elements of life, such as politics, social issues, economics and, of course, religion and/or the lack thereof.

Library’s summer reading  program begins Saturday

The Shelby County Public Library will launch its annual summer reading program with a party on Saturday morning.

The event, which is from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., will include an ice cream sundaes social, digging for treasure activities for children and the Kentucky Blue bluegrass band.

Summer reading story hours will start at 10 a.m. Wednesday for ages toddler through 4-year-olds and will continue each Tuesday through July 23.

Barnett receives honors from JCC

Lana Barnett received a certificate of data entry operator from Jefferson County Community College, Shelby Campus. She is a survivor of a traumatic brain injury from a 4-wheeler accident in 2004. She graduated from Shelby County High School.

Collins honored for historic preservation

Steve Collins has spent a lifetime preserving the history of the state and county he calls home.

Vice chairman of the Kentucky Heritage Council, member of the Shelbyville Historic District Commission, as well as chairman of both the Kentucky Historic Properties Advisory Commission and the Ida Lee Willis Memorial Foundation, Collins now is being recognized formally for all of his contributions by the groups he has helped build.

School board to look at MAP scores

The final round of MAP testing scores for the past school year will be reviewed by the Shelby County School Board on Thursday night.

Deputy Superintendent Lisa Smith will present the scores to the board, for a spring-to-spring comparison as an indication of how students have progressed in their academic year.

Getting a thrill from strawberry hill

After stepping from the shower on Saturday evening, I was greeted by a house full of smoke.

The windows were open, a fan was blowing, the door between the kitchen and living room was closed, and I was stunned that I wasn’t being roused by the overbearing blare of a smoke alarm. Or maybe that was a bad sign.

Should I call 9-1-1? Was everyone OK? Where were the flames? What had blown up?

Well, no and nothing.
