Men’s Health Fair

expects large turnout

About 300 men are expected Saturday to take part in Jewish Hospital Shelbyville’s 13th annual Men’s Health Fair, which is from 8 a.m. to noon at the hospital, at 727 Hospital Drive.

Free screenings include cholesterol, glucose, blood pressure, oral cancer screening, skin cancer screening and the PSA (prostate specific antigen) – a screening to detect prostate cancer in men. The screenings are valued at about $1,400.

Dozens of Shelbyville residents crowded our city hall last November calling on Mayor Tom Hardesty and the city council to consider passage of a simple, anti-discrimination fairness ordinance. The proposed law would prohibit discrimination in employment, housing or public accommodations based upon a person's actual or perceived race, color, religion, national origin, sex, age (over 40), disability, familial status, sexual orientation or gender identity.

Kentucky rain may have been a big hit with Elvis, but for the bee population, it has been causing problems this year, mainly with the head honcho of the hive – the queen bee, experts say.

“There’s been a lot of swarming, but it seems the new queens haven’t been getting properly mated, and that is usually due to weather,” said Clay Guthrie, manager of Dadant & Sons, Inc., a national beekeeping supply chain with 11 stores nationwide, including one in Frankfort.

We have a new hero, and he’s only a junior at Collins High School. His legend wasn’t built on a playing field or stage, like so many of his classmates, but he certainly is a star in our minds.

That’s because we think he sets a refreshing example of how adults in positions of authority should handle themselves in moments of public scrutiny.
