The Triple S Planning Commission had a very brief special called meeting on Thursday at City Hall to address the division of the Payne Farm, an 85-acre parcel zoned Agricultural on Rockbridge Road.

The request to divide the lot into five lots, including one with the current home, was approved with no discussion.

The reason for a special called meeting on the property came because no one was available at the May 21 meeting to answer questions posed by four adjacent property owners in attendance.

Shelby County men turned out by the hundreds for Jewish Hospital Shelbyville's 13th Annual Men's Health Fair on Saturday, surpassing the 300 mark, officials said, and topping the 250 that usually attend each year.

"It's been a great year," JHS spokesperson Holly Husband said.

Tony Carriss, who orchestrated the first health fair after a bout with prostate cancer and now chairs the committee that puts on the event, said he was amazed and gratified with the large attendance.

Cows of all breeds, shapes and sizes paraded around the livestock facility within the Shelby County Fairgrounds on Thursday, officially marking the beginning of the Shelby County Fair.

The district dairy show, beginning at 9 a.m. and lasting for much of the day, saw more than 140 heads of cattle pass through the barn doors. Girls and boys from all across the state and 20 from Shelby County competed. The show is conducted by the Kentucky Department of Agriculture and staffed and supported by the Shelby County Cooperative Extension office.

Shelby County Public Schools named two near leaders for the coming school year.

Brenda King, since 2009 the county’s director of special education, will be the principal of the new Northside Early Childhood Center that  is scheduled to open in January 2014.

And Ayanna Peake, a native of Louisville with an extensive background in psychology, will served as the Reading and Math Proficiency Coordinator (affectionately known as RAMP).
