SCHS doubles team ousted in 2nd...

Shelby County’s doubles duo of junior Doug Martin and freshman Jeron Russell lost Thursday in the second round of the KHSAA State Championships at the Lexington Tennis Center.

Lone Oak’s Cody Dalton and Grant Hammons, one of eight teams in the tourney seeded ninth, outlasted Martin and Russell, 4-6, 6-3, 1-0 (10-6), in the Round of 32.

Martin and Russell had won their first-round match, beating Bowling Green’s Noah Flener and Brandon Lee, 6-2, 6-2, earlier in the day.

Easton Levi Parrett celebrated his first birthday May 18, 2013.

He is the son of Tiffany and Anthony Parrett of Shelbyville.

Grandparents are Shirley and Michal Dorr of Simpsonville, Diane and Irvin Book of Palmyra, Ind., and the late Gilbert H. Parrett Jr.

Great-grandparents are Simon and Margaret Humphrey Jr. of Shelbyville, Carl and Hazel Kiesler of Greenville, Ind., and Ethel Book of New Albany, Ind.

Rockets miss when they need some...

Tuesday night’s 30th District Tournament semifinal between the Shelby County and Spencer County baseball teams came down to one hit.

The Bears got the big one they needed, but the Rockets never did, as Spencer County ended Shelby County’s season with a 4-2 victory at the Shelby County Athletic Complex.  

Josh Ferency’s 3-run double in the second inning was the difference as the third-seeded Bears advanced to Wednesday night’s district final against Collins.

The Bank Swallow, at 5 1/4 inches long, with a 13-inch wide wingspan, is the smallest member of the swallow family. It has a very slim build from head to tail but has a well-defined, distinct breast band, which is emphasized by a white throat.

It’s that time of year again, when farmers are out in their fields planting their crops.

And for most crop farmers – tobacco being the exception – a method known as “no-till planting” is used increasingly.

Instead of “digging up” the ground to plant the coming year’s seed, planting machines make a narrow initial slice in the ground, drop the seed in and then close the slice up again.

No stopping ‘The Rev’

Robert Marshall took on the job of school bus driver in what he thought was a temporary role. Forty years later, he is still behind the wheel for Shelby County Public Schools. Wright Elementary, where students are part of his daily route, wrote 40 postcards each month this school year to mark the occasion. Marshall said he is now transporting grandchildren of some original students. He is also a barber, helper with his wife’s catering business and minister of St. John and Allen Chapel United Methodist churches.

‘Downton Abbey Era’ show coming to public library

Downton Abbey Era: Titanic to the Twenties will be at 6 p.m. Thursday at the Shelby County Public Library. “Regency High Tea” will begin at 6 p.m. sharp, and the Lexington Vintage Dancers will be at 6:30 p.m. Downstairs the servants practice the Grizzly Bear and the Foxtrot.

Upstairs Lady Violet accepts an invitation to waltz. Learn about how the era was reflected in the social dances of the time. (No one will be admitted after dancers begin to perform.)

Dirty learning

Josh Marr uses a magnifying glass to get up close and personal with some soil. The experiment in Rachel Metzger’s fourth-grade class at Wright Elementary prompted the class to study three different types of soil and reach a conclusion about the soils’ connections to plants that would or would not grow. Working with him were Tarryn Stone and Chloe Durham. Observations included pebbles, mulch, little rocks, minerals, crumbly, soft texture, mushy after adding water.
