A veteran who died in battle...

This Memorial Day there is one more family in Shelby County family that will remember a beloved son they never again will see but will hold in their hearts forever.

Sean Cassedy, 31, a Marine who served three tours of duty in Iraq and Afghanistan and was horribly wounded, came home to a hero’s welcome in Bagdad in 2003.

He survived the battlefield, but he could not overcome a battle raging inside him, spawned by memories of those bloody and awful days in combat in the Middle East.

Triple S Planning Commission:...

The Triple S Planning Commission’s agenda was cut short for Tuesday’s meeting by two postponements.

The regular meeting at the Stratton Center opened by postponing, at the applicant’s request, of a zone change request for a less-than-1-acre tract on Benson Pike.

The request is to change a .657-acre tract to General Commercial (C-3) from Residential (R).

The property is on the south side of the Benson Pike, near its dead end. The request will now be heard at the commission’s meeting on June 18.

Ag census deadline is at end of May

With the window to respond to the 2012 Census of Agriculture officially closing on May 31, the U.S. Department of Agriculture is urging farmers and ranchers not to miss this opportunity to be counted and help determine the future of farming in America.

USDA has already received more than 2 million completed agriculture census forms, the agency said in release.

Eighth-grader among state’s best

SCHS eighth-grader River Fuchs (left) placed fifth in social studies at the Kentucky Academic Teams Competition. Marc Johnson is River’s U.S. history teacher, and when he found out that River had scored high enough to compete at the state level, he found materials for River to read and helped him to prepare for his test. As a fifth-place finalist, his history acumen places him at the top of the state’s best talent.

State recognition

Cornerstone Christian Academy seventh-grader Aidan Barbour received state recognition and an invitation to the academy for summer studies through the Duke TIP (Talent Identification Program). Aidan earned the award by scoring at or above the national average of recent high school graduates on at least one part of the ACT or SAT.

Stories and songs

Cassie Wells, Andrew Bates and Trenton Davis listen to a song performed by Mitch Barrett at Shelby County High School. The Kentucky storyteller and musician was the guest attraction for lunch and learn, when students sign up to eat pizza and enjoy a guest speaker in the library. These students, however, were part of an advanced-placement class who came to hear how stories lead to songs.

Rovers open season against...

The Rivers City Rovers, the Premier Development League men’s soccer team that will play its home matches at the Shelby County Athletic Complex, opens its regular season at 7 p.m. Saturday.

The Rovers will host Forest City London from Canada, the defending PDL champs.

“This is an extraordinary event,” Rovers Coach Muhamed Fazlagic said in a press release. “The Rovers are only three years in the PDL, and already we are opening the season against the national champions!”
