Changes for retired teachers

Shelby County retired teachers and teachers approaching retirement be forewarned that the return-to-work statute (KRS 161.605) penalizes retired teachers 33 potential substitute teaching days for every 3-credit-hour class we teach in the community college system. For example, if the local community college hires a retired teacher to teach two 3-credit-hour courses in a year, he/she will lose 66 sub days or 50 percent of the possible days a retired teacher can teach annually.

CASA is good choice

According to Google, there have been over 4,000 studies that show that men and women who were abused as children wind up in prison. Prison and court costs amount to at least $25,000 per year that Kentucky taxpayers must pay. A better way is to use the free volunteer services of Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) to reduce the huge number of incarcerated men, women and children detained in jails, prisons and juvenile detention facilities today.

Accolades for Herb Kays

You could not grow up in Shelbyville and not know a member of the Kays family. The children had great hard-working parents and each one made a contribution in school and in church. Comments from the University of Kentucky Tennis Boosters about the passing of Dr. Herb Kays reflect the type of individual he was – and it reflects the entire family, in my book.

Where are those jobs?

The headline “Are there really 400 open jobs in Shelby County?” (Nov. 18) jumped off the page at me. I was especially intrigued by this article since my son, a recent graduate of Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, is having a difficult time in finding a good job. I read the article several times, and if there are 400 open jobs in Shelby County, you couldn’t prove it by anything I read. One actual job opening, at Family Video, was mentioned in the article.
