    A sensational teen

    It was appropriate that Claire Schaefer was chosen Miss Teen Queen of the Shelby County Fair because she is an all-around queen in our book.

    The Shelby County High School teenager knew how “sensational” it is to enter a pageant and win...bringing home a sash, tiara and flowers. She also knew that girls with special needs probably don’t ever have that opportunity, so she made it happen with the first Miss Sensational pageant.

    Flag Day trivia


    When the United States was first created, our flag had 13 starts and 13 stripes. After the admission of Vermont and Kentucky, a resolution was adopted on Jan. 1, 1794, making a new flag with 15 starts and 15 stripes.

    People should not be concerned about the shortage of building inspectors in the city of Shelbyville (“Shelbyville plugging inspector’s position,” May 30). The Shelby County building inspector cannot enforce the building codes anyway.

    An article (“Businesses receive OK for expansions,” April 20) stated that in seeking its approval from the Triple S Planning Commission to expand, Katayama asked to use older lights on is building that are the same as what it currently has but do not meet the county’s new lighting standards.

    Thwarted effort to help animals


    My daughter is a sophomore at Collins High School and active in the JROTC program.  A few years ago, a friend of hers lead a project called "Feed the Polls."  Voters brought canned goods to polling sites and they were collected at the end of the day and taken to the Food Pantry.

    As we approach the 138th Kentucky Derby, which has amassed dozens of traditions held dear to millions of Derby fans worldwide, I want to address Horizon Group Properties’ plans for an outlet mall in Simpsonville. I live on Veechdale Road and speak for many of my neighbors.
