Why can’t schools plan for off days?

I don't understand why every year the school system in Shelby County has to contend with the same problem of coming up with a plan to make up snow days and changing the date of graduation. Wouldn't it make it easier for everyone involved if there were some make-up days built into the calendar at the beginning of the year?

    A wish come true

Every year since 1985 there has been an ongoing argument after UofL and UK play in the regular season. "They don't want to play ‘Us’ now," "I wish we could play ‘Them’ now," or "We are so much better ‘now’ than we were back in December!"

Be careful what you wish for on both sides.

    Statue options

I have read with interest Bill Matthews’s recent My Word (“Let’s review the statue options,” Feb. 29), and Bill has performed a community service by bringing this issue, with its alternatives, to public attention.  I certainly agree with his suggestion that the Shelby County Historical Society, with the knowledge and expertise that its members possess, should appoint a committee to examine this issue.

    Don’t judge tattoos

Steve Doyle’s column (“On Valentine’s Day, there’s no love lost for tattoos,” Feb. 15) has not only offended me but many of my friends. I personally have three tattoos. I am not ashamed, and I do not and never will regret getting them.

    Democratic mistakes

Are we the only ones who noticed a few weeks ago in The Sentinel-Newsthat Gov. Steve Beshear stated there would have to be a lot of cuts in Kentucky’s budget because of lack of funds?

    Ramp: Just keep driving

When I saw the picture on the front page of The Sentinel-Newson Jan. 25, accompanying the story "Dangerous ramp to be replaced," I was dumbfounded, as I am every time this topic comes up.

    Sad school day

Since when is it a crime to walk your first-grader to her classroom? I recently took my daughter to school because she  had a project to turn in. As I entered the front door of the school, I was told by the principal to leave the project in the office, she would take it

to the classroom later. I told her that I wanted to walk my daughter and the project to the classroom. She then proceeds to tell me that normally it isn't  done this way but to hurry up!
