    Thanks for help with Crusade

The Shelby County Fire Department would like to thank everyone in Shelby County who gave to the 2015 WHAS Crusade for Children. This is a time of year that our firefighters look forward to because we believe so strongly in this cause. Many volunteers join the firefighters in collecting donations, including the Shelby County Ladies Auxiliary, SCFD Junior Firefighters, friends and family of the firefighters and various community organizations.

    Cemetery clean and without issue

In your April 10 issue, allegations were published that a private cemetery was neglected and being abused. Because of the reports of damage and desecration, the Shelby County Cemetery Preservation Board was contacted for comments.

    Sustainable Eating

Just in time for the 45th anniversary of Earth Day last month, the U.S. Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee made it official: U.S. consumption of animal products is not environmentally sustainable at current levels.

Their conclusion matches those of a comprehensive 2010 United Nations finding that a global shift towards a vegan diet is vital to save the world from hunger, fuel poverty and climate change.

    Supports Bevin

"It does not take a majority to prevail but rather an irate, tireless minority, keen on setting brushfires of freedom in the minds of men."

In support of the tourism tax

I am writing to support the restaurant tax that is currently before the Shelbyville City Council.  Having served as Mayor [of Shelbyville], I know how difficult it is to vote for a tax.  There is no perfect tax.  We passed the occupational tax back many years ago after federal revenue sharing was eliminated and over a third of our budget disappeared overnight.

An opportunity for Human Rights Commission

I find it odd and disturbing that the chair of our local human rights commission would resign in response to a Kentucky Commission on Human Rights resolution in support of, well, human rights.

    April Fools’ Day

    Dear Editor,

With April Fools' Day just around the corner, it appears that the meat, egg, and dairy industries have been playing us for fools all year-round. Their more remarkable hoaxes include “California's happy cows,” “Free-range chickens,” “Humane slaughter.” All lies.

Reducing meat, dairy for personal, environmental health

The U.S. Advisory Panel on Dietary Guidelines has finally mustered the courage to recommend that Americans eat less meat and dairy products. And not just to lower our risk of heart disease, stroke, cancer, diabetes and obesity, but also because it slows the rate of climate changes, with its own devastating consequences.

Friends of Grove Hill give thanks

As a new year starts to unfold, Friends of Grove Hill look back on what was an exceptional year of accomplishments thanks to the many who have supported events and causes of Grove Hill Cemetery. We are thankful for people who rolled up their sleeves and rolled out their checkbooks to make this a year of milestone achievements.

  • Work and Ministry at Buffalo Lick Church

I started attending Buffalo Lick Church in 1980. Our attendance has been at all different levels during these years. The lowest we have ever been is at the present time.

Usual kind of decrease due to death, sickness, moving away is understandable.

But, I have always wondered why all neighboring homes in the near vicinity haven’t even visited?

Also, why families close by who have been past members went to other churches and left for some reason that they could have worked to have at Buffalo Lick? In my opinion some were so lame.
