    A flag from history

     

    On May 21, 1944, Navy Landing Ship Tanks (LST) 779 was launched by Dravo shipbuilders into the Ohio River at Pittsburgh. The ship came down the Ohio and Mississippi rivers to New Orleans, where she was commissioned, and went through the Panama Canal and sailed to Pearl Harbor, where on Dec. 7, 1941, the Japanese had bombed the ships in the harbor and damaged and sunk several of them. Many U.S. sailors had given their lives.

    Cheers for Beshear

     

    For the 300,000 Kentuckians living on the edge of the federal poverty line,  Gov. Steve Beshear’s action this week couldn’t come soon enough. And it makes a nice Mother’s Day surprise for everyone without health coverage who fears getting sick or hurt. Kentucky Youth Advocates reports an estimated 162,000 uninsured parents in Kentucky, and expanding Medicaid will provide 

    coverage to 97,000 of those parents.

    Decrying NBC’s comments

     

    General Electric Corp. Declares Homosexuality to be a "good thang." G.E. spokesman Matt Liar on NBC’s Today Show announced how wonderful an event that Jason Collins is "gay." Jason is a player in the NBA (never heard of him). He is apparently cut in the same mold as that creep Dennis Rodman and Kobe Bryant, not to mention O.J. All of these folks are terribly overpaid social pukes, including Matt.

    County needs recycling

     

    As I ponder what project to do for Earth Day this year, I can't help but think how disappointing our county government is to abandon the curbside garbage/recycling issue.  Offering garbage pickup and recycling at a lower price makes sense and helps protect the environment.

    I am not loyalty to any vendor, and I don't have time to compare prices.  The city and county can get a better rate than just one person.  This negotiated price should include recycling.

    Postal problems

     

    Is the postal crisis real or man-made? The post office would have made over $400,000 in 2012 but for a death-stroke bill passed in December 2006 mandating that within 10 years the post office had to pony up 75 years in advance all the health-care benefits of all the postal retirees. This burden costs the post office over $5 billion a year.

    That kind of burden would kill any department, especially when it is regulated by a postal regulatory commission.
