  • Cross country: Karas, Webb lead Lady Rockets

    The SCHS girls’ cross-country team finished 12th out of 22 teams at the Lexington Catholic Invitational large school 5K race Saturday at the Kentucky Horse Park.

    Caterina Karas led the team with a 10th-place finish, in a time of 19 minutes, 59 seconds, out of the more than 160 individual runners. Taylor Webb was just behind her in 23rd, with a time of 20:42.

    Sacred Heart’s Emma Brink won the event in 18:49; she was the only runner under 19 minutes.

    Senior standout Stacey Eden led Shelby County with a second-place finish at the Lexington Catholic Invitational large school 5K race at the Kentucky Horse Park on Saturday.

    Eden’s time of 16 minutes, 21 seconds was just 15 seconds behind winner Ryan Eaton of Greenwood.

    The Rockets placed 11th overall out of 25 teams. St. Xavier took the team title, with all five runners finishing between 13th and 21st place.

  • Animal shelter loses its 'no kill' status

    After enjoying its "No Kill" status for nearly four months, the Shelby County Animal Shelter lost that distinction this past weekend.

    James Collins, director of the shelter, said seven dogs were euthanized because they were aggressive.

    The shelter will house aggressive animals if there is space, but this weekend, there wasn't.

    One of the euthanatized dogs, ironically named "Lucky," was aggressive to other dogs and to cats but not to people, Collins said.

    Five other dogs were the same, and one dog was aggressive to everyone.

  • EARLIER: Lady Rockets in Third Place After First Round

    BOWLING GREEN - After an epic first round (7 hours, 30 minutes) the Lady Rockets were in third place in the girls state golf tournament Saturday at Bowling Green Country Club.

    And the day's not over.

    Teams and players who made the cut will get the second round under way and play until about 6:15. Unlike the morning shotgun round, the second round will use tee times.

    SCHS coach Anna Simpson said she wished her girls could walk away and start fresh tomorrow.

    Kentucky State Police announced Monday that testing for trooper applicants will be held the week of Nov. 16 at the Department of Criminal Justice Training, located on the campus of Eastern Kentucky University in Richmond.
