There will be a reception Monday, May 12 at 7 p.m. to recognize county and school winners in the annual Young Authors program. The event at Painted Stone Elementary, 150 Warriors Way, will salute students in grades 1-8 from Shelby County Public Schools and Our Lady of Guadalupe Academy. See the following chart for names with an asterisk signifying the county winners.

Until five months ago, Miguel Medina made a decent living as an independent truck driver. The job gave him the freedom to set his own schedule and be his own boss.

The downside, Medina said, was having to pay for fuel out of his own pocket. Late last year, as rising diesel prices devastated his profit margins, Medina said he had to quit his contracting business and seek employment with a trucking company.

The county will once again tackle the issue of Sunday liquor sales.

The Shelby County Fiscal Court will hear public comment at the Stratton Center at 7 p.m. Tuesday, May 13.

At the court's May 6 meeting, magistrates passed a first reading on an ordinance that would allow Sunday liquor sales by the glass at restaurants and golf courses which seat at least 100 people or derive a minimum of 70 percent of sales from food.
