  • Local golfer to play in Women's Publinx

    Shelby County golfer Candice Wiley missed out on qualifying for one big tournament this summer, but she picked up on another one.

    Wiley tried to qualify for the Women's U.S. Open, but missed out. However, Wiley did qualify for the U.S. Women's Amateur Public Links (Publinx) Tournament to be held June 16-21 at Erin Hills Golf Course in Erin, Wis.

    The qualifying tournament was held a couple of weeks ago at South Grove Golf Course in Indianapolis. In the single-round qualifying tournament Wiley shot a 74, good for second place and one of two qualifying spots in the Publinx.

  • Dystonia event Saturday

    Having a rare disease is scary. Having doctors not know how to treat you can be terrifying.

    Just ask Jennifer Heil. Before she was being properly diagnosed with Dystonia, Heil went to see four doctors and lived through months of pain.

    Dystonia, which is a neurological disorder that is characterized by repetitive muscle contractions, can cause the twisting and jerking movement of the body.

    Heil said the disease causes all of the muscles in her face, neck, back and stomach to constrict.

  • An opportunity for fairness

    On May 27, fiscal court had the opportunity to put all businesses in Shelby County on the same playing field. The issue before them was an ordinance that would allow nine businesses in the county (but outside the city limits of Shelbyville) that are licensed to sell alcohol by the drink to serve their customers on Sundays. There are 72 businesses with the same license, but those inside the city limits are allowed to serve on Sundays. The city council approved an ordinance allowing them to do so, because of economic reasons.

  • Goal: Removing the barriers to education

    In his first official act as superintendent, James Neihof got to hand out diplomas to over 300 seniors at the graduation ceremony last Friday night.

    Neihof, who took office on Monday, said seeing all of the Shelby County High School students receive a certificate for 12 years of successful education reminded him of why he wanted to be superintendent of Shelby County Public Schools.

    "This is why we do what we do," he said. "To see those kids succeed in school and be prepared to excel in whatever they go on to next."

  • A new view of old downtown

    While Patrick Rymer and Ray Wadsworth are at work, they have one of the best views of downtown Shelbyville to be found.

    Three-stories up in their hydraulic cherry picker, the two men can be seen just about every day of the week scraping and painting the exterior of buildings on Main Street. In the last couple years, the men have restored the outside of eight buildings in the downtown area.

    Along with freshening up the paint, Rymer has also made restorations to many of the trademark second-story windows in downtown.

  • Yard sale to help family

    A community yard sale will be held this weekend to help cover the medical costs of a local woman who was hurt in a car accident five years.

    In 2003, Carmela Cox was in an automobile accident that caused a massive stroke. The trauma caused her to lose the use of her left arm and much of her ability to walk.

    The money raised from the yard sale will be used to offset medical expenses.

  • Post 37 kicks off season

    American Legion Post 37 head coach Jim Wiley purposely put together a very tough schedule for his team this year.

    Wiley believed his team would be very strong this season with a crop of successful high school players and a strong group of returning college players.

    However, things can change quickly. Wiley was hesitant to comment on the team's roster, saying instead he has a very strong team on the disabled list.

    "We have a lot of questions already," Wiley said. "I've seen them all play and I haven't been very impressed. Plus, we have several kids hurt already."

  • Commission hoping for 'downtown' Simpsonville

    The Simpsonville City Commission Tuesday formally asked Triple S Planning and Zoning to conduct a study on how the city can create a downtown district.

    "We're asking zoning to do a small-area study to create a downtown district," Simpsonville Mayor Steve Eden said. "We know this is a 20-to-40-year project, but we want to lay the groundwork now."

  • Roberts heads to Woodford Farm Bureau

    After 10 years with the Shelby County Farm Bureau, Courtney Roberts has taken the position as agency manager with the Farm Bureau office in Woodford County.

    "It's a good move and I'm just real excited about it," Roberts said.

    Roberts went to work in Woodford County June 2 and will move there soon.

    "I have mixed emotions about his leaving," said Shelby County Farm Bureau Agency Manager Pat Hargadon. "But I'm super, super proud of him."
