Hours before Rev. Lewis Coleman Jr. died, he was preparing a sermon that he hoped would challenge the people of his Shelbyville congregation to take a stand for justice.

But on Saturday afternoon, just hours before the service was to begin, Coleman died from a seizure attack. He was 64.

Coleman fought for social justice for close to 40 years. In that time he organized hundreds of protests across the state on issues ranging from inequalities in hiring practices to the need for more gun control.

It's not the fact that the Shelbyville American Legion Post 37 baseball team dropped two games against Evansville; it's the way it's happening that bothers head coach Jim Wiley.

"I thought our team looked better, but when we went out to play it wasn't there," he said. "They out hit us, out pitched us and played better defensively. At first I thought it was just one of those days where things don't fall together. But the more I think about it, it seems like every time we play good competition we make mistakes defensively and we don't hit."

This opinion is in response to Linda Allewalt's opinion of the alleged disrespect regarding a young lady's impromptu prayer during the SCHS 2008 graduation ceremony. First, let me say that I do respect Ms. Allewalt's opinion as protected by the First Amendment and thusly that I too am forwarded that same protection and right. Let me also remind the readers that the student, in which Ms. Allewalt's opinion is aimed, also has that same protection and right as it will clearly be defined in my opinion.

Despite the doom and gloom about gas prices and the economy in general, it's a good time to buy a home.

That's the message to visitors of Shelbyville's first Home Expo planned for Saturday, July 12 in Floral Hall at the Shelby County Fairgrounds. The event will run from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The expo is free and participants will be eligible for giveaways, including a big screen TV and free closing costs.
