  • Water towers to get Saddlebred murals

    Two water towers in Shelbyville soon will showcase Shelby County's biggest tourist attraction -- the Saddlebred horse industry.

    The Shelbyville Water and Sewer Commission voted Monday night to allow the Shelbyville Horse Show to paint Saddlebred murals on the water towers in downtown Shelbyville and at Weissinger Hills Golf course.

    The Horse Show will paint the murals on the towers at their own cost.

  • Barrel Blasts and Coonskin Caps

    The Painted Stone Settlers put on their reenactment of the Long Run Massacre at Red Orchard Park last weekend.

    The reenactment had a record crowd on Saturday, and event organizers said the new location at Red Orchard was ideal.

    This annual, 2-day festival commemorates the pioneering days and two bloody conflicts that occurred between a group of settlers and a tribe of Native Americans here in Shelby County.

  • North Bullitt gets big plays to beat Rockets, 27-14

    Four plays.

    If Shelby County could have stopped four plays by North Bullitt on Friday night, who knows how the game might have turned out?

    Instead, the Rockets fell on the road, 27-14, dropping to 0-2 on the season.

    They started the game with an onside kick that really served two purposes: to keep the ball away from North Bullitt's dangerous return man, Dalton Cissell, and to try to provide a quick spark. But that didn't work because the kick failed to travel the required 10 yards.

  • Ryder Cup: A spectators' guide

    It's here! The week we have been waiting for has finally arrived!

    We have all talked about this week since it was announced in late 2000. This is the week that we have anticipated as though something magical was going to happen to our small section of the map.

    Here is the Ryder Cup!

    For some who plan to attend, this may be your first experience watching a professional golf event at Valhalla Golf Club. For others this may be a follow-up from your attendance of the 1996 and 2000 PGA Championships or the 2004 Senior PGA Championship.

  • Rockets hammer Spencer County, 11-1

    The Shelby County boys' soccer team started fast, drilling Spencer County, 11-1, Saturday.

    Carlos Carias scored within the first minute for the Rockets (3-4-1) to set the pace of the game.

    "After that we were just firing shots everywhere," SCHS Coach B.J. Andriot said. "We were just over the net, just to side of the net, and their goalie made a few nice saves."

    Spencer County (4-6), however, got back at the Rockets.

  • Boy dies in violent windstorm - 5,000 still without power

    A 10-year-old boy was killed Sunday afternoon when high winds broke off a large tree limb that fell and crushed him at his family's home near Simpsonville.

    Frederick Wilson, 10, is the only known fatality from Sunday's massive windstorm, which caused fires, knocked out power, interrupted cable service and knocked broadcast channels off the air.

    The storm, which was created by the breakup of Hurricane Ike, pummeled Western Kentucky and the Louisville Metro area with winds in excess of 70 mph.

  • Nappy Roots to play at Park

    One of the biggest hip-hop groups from Kentucky will be performing in Shelbyville next month.

    Nappy Roots, of Bowling Green, will headline a performance at the Clear Creek Park amphitheater on Oct. 11. The band will be touring on their new album "The Humdinger", released last month.

    Also performing during the show is Lexington-based rapper Cypher and local performers Vernon and Justin Tolbert. The performances will be from 6 to 10 p.m.

  • Cup Experience hits Cardinal Club

    With Ryder Cup fever sweeping through the state, Shelby County is getting into the act.

    The Cardinal Club in Simpsonville is playing host to the Inaugural Humana Fightmaster Cup, which tees off today at 8 a.m. and runs through Sunday.
