  • Water and sewer rates pumping up?

Shelbyville City Council approved the first reading of an ordinance Thursday that would increase city water rates by 5.8 percent and sewage rates by 4.5 percent.

Tom Doyle, manager of Shelbyville Municipal Water and Sewer, presented the ordinance to the council, stating that the revised schedule of rates and charges would bring in the revenue necessary to balance the budget for the Municipal Waterworks and Sewer System.

  • Trinity rallies past Rockets

A ferocious fourth-quarter capped a dominant second half as Trinity (2-0) upended the host Rockets (1-2), 70-48, Saturday.

  • Lady Rockets hold off South

Taylor Shaw hit one of two free throws with just seconds remaining to push the Lady Rockets’ lead to three, 47-44. The Lady Dragons responded in a strange fashion, taking a lay in at the buzzer instead of trying for the tie with a 3-point shot.

“We knew we had to guard the three, and I’m not really sure why they took the shot they did,” SCHS Coach Sally Zimmerman said.

  • How about that civic center for Shelby County?

When the Triple S Planning Commission held its three public input sessions last month, the idea of building some sort of conference/convention facility was met with shared enthusiasm by the citizens in attendance.

But the idea is nothing new.

  • We congratulate: Local teen who climbed Grand Canyon is a star

Skylar Cannon accomplished a feat that is difficult to do on two legs, much less wheels.

She traversed one of the paths to the bottom of the Grand Canyon in her wheelchair, and she became the first person to do it.

Skylar, 13, is a student at East Middle School who suffers from the terminal disease Spinal Muscular Atrophy, but she lives a fuller life than most.

She has grown into the kind of person who relishes and attacks challenges rather than complaining and sitting back to see what might happen to her.

  • Chevron employee jailed for burglary of his own station

  • Bottom to join Triple S

When one door closes, another one opens.

Dudley Bottom Jr. narrowly missed being elected to the Shelbyville City Council last month after being, edged out by George Best and five other candidates.

For Best to take his seat on the council, though he first must leave his 14-year position as chairman of the Triple S Planning and Zoning Commission.

  • College information forum next week

Next school year most colleges in the state and across the nation will increase their tuition by an average of 9 percent.

That increase might make some parents think that college is out of reach for their child, but one local parent is hoping to shed some light on how to lower the price of higher education.

Patti Wilson, a mother of two, will host a college information forum next week in order to instruct prospective college students and their parents in the art of how to get academic scholarships.
