  • Commercial changes coming to downtown Shelbyville - 4 new businesses opening as some depart

    The lineup of businesses in downtown Shelbyville is about to have some noticeable changes, with a new retail outlet filling open store fronts at 718 Main Street as soon as Friday.

    That's where To Be Continued, a clothing and furniture consignment store, will assume space vacated by longtime downtown businesses Image Tree, which has closed, and Country Squire, which has reduced its space.

    Also coming soon are Through The Looking Glass, a new boutique tea room, a new counseling service and a new gallery.

    Departing are the bridal shop Eventuality and Main Street Music.

  • Miller pleads not guilty to wanton endangerment

    A Bagdad-area man who is a minister at a church in Louisville was arraigned in Shelby District Court on Tuesday after being indicted for pointing a loaded gun at his neighbor.

    Richard Miller of Cedarmore Road pleaded not guilty before District Judge Donna Dutton to a second-degree wanton endangerment charge in connection with an alleged altercation with Dana Duncan on July 24.

  • The man of aces - Jeffries has carded 22 holes-in-one

    Bennie Jeffries says the game of golf is easy, the objective being to hit the ball into the hole.

    So every time he tees one up, he expects the ball wind up in the cup.

    Twenty-two times Jeffries has teed it up and done just that, and that's not including the three times he has made par on a par 3 when his first shot went into the water.

    And don't forget his four double-eagles.

  • Thief drops in at local pharmacy - Police say intruder punched hole in roof in attempt to steal drugs

    When the owner of Smith-McKinney Pharmacy on Midland Trail found out his store had been broken into, he didn't go through the roof - but the intruder already had.

    Ralph Taylor Williams, 50, of 42 Johnathon Circle was arrested Friday for breaking into the drugstore by cutting a hole in the roof, Shelbyville Police said.

    "He cut a hole in the roof and lowered himself down with a rope with a toe strap on it," Maj. Danny Goodwin said.

  • Rockets offense continues to struggle - Shelby falls 35-13 to No. No. 4 Manual

    The Shelby County offense, once a high-octane force continued to sputter Friday because of injuries throughout its lineup.

    The Rockets, playing without 13 injured players, managed a meager 258 yards in a 35-13 home loss to Class 6A No. 4 Manual.

    While the offense continues to look for answers, the defense has stepped up its play, despite the final score.

  • Montell picks up three endorsements

    State Rep. Brad Montell announced three endorsements Tuesday that he said, "represent the cornerstone endorsements that are key to my campaign."

    He announced he has been endorsed by Kentucky Right to Life, the National Rifle Association and the Kentucky Chamber of Commerce.

    "These endorsements are central to my message," Montell said.

    Montell, a Republican, is running for a fourth term as state representative for the 58th House district, which covers Shelby and Spencer counties. His challenger is Democrat Bill Young. Montell defeated Young two years ago.

  • State tournament play suspended, will resume Thursday

    The KHSAA Girls' State Golf Tournament will continue one more day.

    Officials' suspended play at 6:30 p.m. CDT Wednesday, meaning the tournament champion will be crowned Thursday morning.

    That doesn't mean there is much drama for the individual champion. Emma Talley, of Caldwell County, was 10-under for the tournament through 15 holes of the second round.

    North Hardin's Lydia Gumm is 1-under through 14, and Shelby County's Candice Wiley is tied for third at 3-over through with two more holes to play.

  • Prosecutor to appeal drug dealer's sentence - Judge too lenient, she says

    A Shelbyville man was sentenced Friday to 15 years in prison - a sentence that Shelby County Commonwealth's Attorney Laura Donnell plans to appeal because of its lenience.

    Josh Hall, 24, was sentenced on three Class B felonies, including trafficking in cocaine and being a persistent felony offender.

    Donnell said she believes the sentence from Senior Judge Tom McDonald doesn't go as far as the law requires.

  • Louisville race leaves bad taste for Shelby - SCHS girls finish 8th, boys place 6th

    The Shelby County cross-country teams headed to E.P. Tom Sawyer Park Saturday for the Greater Louisville Classic.

    Both teams had solid results but finished a little lower than they expected.

    The Shelby boys took sixth place overall but were more than 40 points behind second-place Butler, a team Shelby has faced several times this season.

    The girls finished eighth, and Coach Slone Jacobi said her team wasn't pleased.
