  • Shelby woman found dead in motel

    A Pleasureville resident was found dead in a hotel room in Shelbyville early Saturday morning.

    Connie Joelene Landers, 32, died at the Best Western Motel from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

    Shelby County Coroner Jeff Iver, who worked the scene, said Shelby County EMS was called to the scene in the early morning hours and discovered Landers’ body. He released no further details.

    Family members said that Landers had been distraught over long-term chronic pain.

  • Spencer man found shot to death in barn

    A Bardstown man found dead in a barn off Bowman Lane with a single gunshot wound through the head has left the community shocked, neighbors unsettled and the perpetrator at large.

    The investigation of Daniel D. Cahoe's suspicious death started late Thursday evening after he was found slumped over in an empty barn in the 2000 block of Bowman Lane near the intersection of West River Road. But what was once considered a death investigation has now been classified as a homicide investigation by Kentucky State Police. 

  • Birth: Roberts daughter

    Doug and Carrie Roberts of Carthage, Mo. announce the birth of their second child, a daughter, on Dec. 12, 2011 at McCune-Brooks Regional Hospital in Carthage. She has been named Jordan Lee Roberts. She joins big sister Hope Frances, age 2.

    Grandparents are Dave and Iva Geiger of Allen, Neb., Marty Wright of Carthage, Mo. and Robert and Bea Roberts of Las Vegas, Nev.

    Great-grandparents are the late Myron and Julia Osbahr, Jim and Iola Geiger, Sam and Mary Emily Rutledge and Sanford and Flora Roberts.

    Redistricting plan could

    gain momentum today

    The state House is expected to act this week on the controversial issue of redrawing the boundaries of legislative and congressional districts.
    House State Government Committee chairman Mike Cherry (D-Princeton) told The Herald-Leaderon Monday that his panel was scheduled to take up legislation to redraw boundaries for the 100 state House districts today.

    FRANKFORT – The first week of the 2012 legislative session was a combination of the ceremonial and the new. We gaveled in on Tuesday of last week with the traditional establishment of the membership of the Senate and approval of our chamber’s rules.

    More than 200 bills have been filed in the General Assembly and will start making their way through the committee process beginning in earnest this week.

  • MY WORD: Remembering 1994’s bitter winter blast

    We’ve complained in recent years about the single-digit temperatures we've seen from time to time during the winter months here in central Kentucky. So far this season, the 10-15-degree range is about as cold as we've gotten, but even at that you can hear grumblings from folks about how spring can't show up fast enough.

    I thought I'd do a quick little write-up about the January we experienced here 18 years ago, just to jog our memories and remind us that it could be worse — a lot worse.

  • Lane of I-64 to be closed Tuesday night

    The Department of Highways District 5 Office announces the temporary closure of the right lane on eastbound Interstate 64 in Shelby County at mile point 29, near Simpsonville.

    The lane closure is scheduled for Tuesday from 6:30 p.m. until midnight and will allow for bridge deck patching.
