  • Longtime SCHS coach going to Hall of Fame

    Roland Dale coached track and field at SCHS for 27 years and cross country for 26. He had All-state runners and individual state champs, his teams finished third at the state in both sports, but he didn’t expect this.

    Last week Dale found out he was being inducted into the KHSAA Hall of Fame for track and cross country at a banquet Saturday in Lexington.

    “You know, you’re always surprised when your peers consider you for an honor like this,” he said.

  • Rockets eyeing South Oldham for first win

    The Shelby County Rockets will have what looks like its best shot at a victory this season when South Oldham visits Robert Doyle Stadium tonight.

    Both teams are 0-8 on the season, and SCHS Coach Todd Shipley said that's all the more reason the Rockets must remain focused.

    "We can't take anybody lightly," he said. "South Oldham is doing the same thing we are -- 'We're playing Shelby County, so this is our best chance to get a win.' I'm more concerned about the little things we're doing that keep hurting us."

  • Former Rocket named to all-academic team

    Centre College senior and former SCHS Rocket Neil Murphy has been named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District football team by the College of Sports Information Directors of America.

    Murphy, who was named to the District 4 College Division Second team, is a two-year starter at defensive tackle for the Colonels and has posted a 3.65 GPA in a double-major of anthropology and sociology.

    Murphy has been on the Dean’s List three times and has been on the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Academic Honor Roll three times.

  • Rockets’ season ends at Male

    Early on, the game had all the makings of an upset.

    A little scuffle before the game had Shelby County fired up, the Rockets hit a big pass play for a quick, early score, and the game was close, 17-10, as the first half wound down in Shelby County’s first-round playoff game at Male High School on Friday.

    But the Bulldogs asserted themselves quickly and advanced to second round with a 59-31 victory over the Rockets.

  • Rockets fall 59-31 at Male

    For a quarter and a half it looked like the Rockets would have a chance for an upset at Male High School Friday.

    The Bulldogs, however, weren't ready for their season to end and scored early and often in the second half on the way to a 59-31 win. Male scored a touchdown with less than a minute to go in the second quarter, then scored 28 in third and added another score early in the fourth to blow the game open.

  • Simpsonville Commission chooses Vowels

    Simpsonville voters will never know who actually won the 2008 race for the city commission.

    But as of Tuesday night, the four seats on the city's governing body have been completed, and the commissioners have been sworn in.

    At Tuesday's commission meeting, Mayor Steve Eden announced that Dottie Shelburne had resigned from her seat on the commission.

    In November, Shelburne beat out fellow incumbent Cary Vowels by one vote, 340-339, in an election that was tainted when non-city residents voted in the race.

    Shelby County Grand Jury Indictments

    Joseph Napier of Shelbyville was indicted for theft by unlawful taking over $300; complicity, operating a motor vehicle on a suspended license; and possession of an open alcoholic beverage container in a vehicle.

    Larry G. Dowell of Louisville was indicted for theft by unlawful taking over $300 and complicity.

    James Arnold Clark of Eminence was indicted for first-degree arson, second-degree arson, first-degree criminal mischief and third-degree criminal mischief.

  • Animal shelter to get new truck

    Shelby County Animal Shelter officials were elated to learn they were getting a new truck, because the shelter's two existing vehicle's have gone to the dogs.

    “Both of them have almost 150,000 miles on them,” Animal Control Officer James Collins said.

    The Shelby County Fiscal Court approved the purchase of the new F-150 Ford pickup truck at $16,304, which includes a bed liner and topper, from O'Brian Ford Mercury.

    Rusty Newton, acting Animal Control Director, said the new truck will be an asset to the shelter.

  • Farmers say cigarette tax not best way to cover budget shortfall

    With the state facing a budget shortfall of $456 million by the end of June, Gov. Steve Beshear's plan to raise the cigarette tax is getting a better reception among lawmakers this year than it did last year.

    But local farmers and farm organizations said the plan to raise the state tax on cigarettes to a buck a pack will not yield the revenue stream the Governor envisions and will hurt a critical ag industry.
