  • Schools' program helps migrant youth, farmers

    A USDA program administered by Shelby County Public Schools can help both the children of migrant workers as well as the farmers they are working for. Problem is, few farmers know about it.

    The Migrant Education Program (MEP) is designed to serve children of agricultural workers who have been in the county less than three years. Those eligible for the program can be up to 22 years of age, but they, or their parents, must work in agriculture. The workers do not have to belong to a particular ethnic group as long as they work on farms or nurseries.

  • State police looking for stolen trailer and three remote controlled airplanes

    Kentucky State Police is asking the public for help in recovering a stolen trailer and three remote control airplanes.

    The theft occurred in Spencer County in the early morning of Sept. 22. Unknown subject or subjects stole the trailer with remote airplanes inside it from the Finish Line Automotive located on KY 55 in Taylorsville.

    KSP investigators believe that it possible that the thieves were unaware at the time of the theft the airplanes where inside the trailer.

  • EARLIER: Ex-star Casey hospitalized

    Shelby County athletic legend Mike Casey is hospitalized in Lexington fighting complications caused by a significant infection.

    Casey, a former Kentucky Mr. Basketball who starred at Shelby County High School and the University of Kentucky, is being treated at Central Baptist Hospital after his illness triggered his heart defibrillator at least 11 times.

  • Shelby County Community Foundation gives $55,500 in grants

    The Shelby County Community Foundation Monday gave $55,500 to four non-profit agencies.

    The funds went to: Shelby Center for Disability Services, Commerce Enhancement Corp, Shelby County Substance Abuse Treatment, and Hosparus, Inc.

    Each will use the funds differently.

  • Casey is home, feeling 'pretty good'

    Former Shelby County High School and University of Kentucky basketball star Mike Casey is recuperating at home today from a heart episode that hospitalized him for several days.

    Casey has battled heart problems since 1989, and Saturday he was rushed to Southeast Baptist Hospital in Lexington after an apparent infection caused his heart defibrillator to shock him at least 11 times and his blood pressure to fall perilously low.

  • State police honors 30 officers

    State police honors 30 officers

    Last week, the Kentucky State Police announced the promotion of 30 officers at a ceremony held in Louisville.

    One lieutenant colonel, three majors, five captains, five lieutenants and 16 sergeants were commissioned, according to Sgt. David Jude in media relations.
