What do you get when you mix a lousy economy with the boxes, ribbons and bags of the holiday retail season?

Becky Johnson is calling it "Christmas lite."

Johnson, a mother of two, said she will still buy presents for her family this year, but the amount she spends will be significantly less.

"My kids know to expect less under the tree this year," she said. "They know that we've got a budget, and we have to survive after holidays are over. But they're teenagers...so it's harder for them to accept."

President-elect Barack Obama has recently nominated Marine Corps General James L. Jones, Jr. to be his National Security Advisor.

In this position Jones will head the National Security Council, which has the function of advising and assisting the President on national security and foreign policies and coordinating these policies among various government agencies.

His uncle, William K. "Bill" Jones, was a contemporary of mine in the Marine Corps.  And this is the story of the elder Jones.

Troopers to participate in presidential inauguration

Two Kentucky State Police troopers are scheduled to participate in the 56th Presidential Inauguration in Washington D.C.

Troopers Hunter Martin of Louisville and Jason Palmer of Lexington, both of Post 12, which includes Shelby County, have been selected to go to the nation's capitol for the historic event. They will be in Washington, D.C. from Sunday, Jan. 18, to Wednesday, Jan. 21. They will be part of a detail that will provide assistance to the Metropolitan Police Department there.

 You probably were standing in the bone-chilling cold Saturday and watching Santa arrive in Shelbyville at the end of a long parade.

Chances are, you’ve been there before, sometimes huddled in the rain, sometimes elbow-to-elbow with friends but always enjoying the magic and anticipation that the parade represents.

This has been a great tradition of Shelbyville as long as I can remember. It’s no made-for-TV production, but it’s ours.
