  • Sentinel-News staffers win big in LCNI contest

    Staff members of The Sentinel-Newswon 10 awards – including six first-place awards – among multiple weekly newspapers in the annual judging of Landmark Community Newspapers publications.

    Those 10 awards were the most won by any non-daily publication in the competition, which separates dailies, weeklies and multiweeklies in most categories.

    Staff writer Lisa King and editor Steve Doyle won first place awards, and staff writer Todd Martin and sports writer Josh Cook also took firsts.

    Commencements to be

    broadcast on the Web

    Shelby County High School’s graduation is 1 p.m. Saturday, and Collins’ is at 7 p.m. Saturday, both in the schools’ gymnasiums for those with tickets.

    But if  you don’t have tickets, you still can see the commencements exercises June 4 via live broadcasts in the respective school’s  theater – and on the school district’s Web site (www.shelby.kyschools.us).

  • Armed Forces: Pvt. Scott E. Gaines

    Army National Guard Pvt. Scott E. Gaines graduated from the Infantryman One Station Unit Training at Fort Benning, Ga. The training consists of Basic Infantry Training and Advanced Individual Training.

  • Engagement: Hilferty-Turner

    Kent and Judy Hilferty of Madrid, Neb., announce the engagement of their daughter, Amy Hilferty of Shelbyville, to Micheal Turner of Frankfort. He is the son of Kenny and Venita Turner of Frankfort.

    Hilferty is a 2004 graduate of Wheatland Public School in Madrid and a 2006 graduate of Nebraska College of Technical Agriculture in Curtis, Neb., where she earned an associates of applied science degree in veterinary technology, with an emphasis in Equine Care. She is an internal medicine veterinary technician at Louisville Veterinary Specialty and Emergency Services

    Rick and Lisa Mahoney of Eminence announce the engagement of their daughter, Victoria Renne Mahoney, to Michael Caleb Wood, son of David and Brenda Wood of Smithfield.

    Mahoney is a 2005 graduate of Henry County High School, a 2009 graduate of Northern Kentucky University with a bachelor’s degree in marketing, and she is currently pursuing a master’s in business administration at Xavier University in Cincinnati. She is employed with Procter and Gamble of Cincinnati.

  • Country Club asks city for Sunday liquor sales

    The Shelbyville Country Club is looking to expand the liquor license it just acquired in April.

    The club has requested the Shelbyville City Council to allow it to have sales on Sunday. The request will be heard at Thursday 6:30 p.m. meeting at City Hall.

    The country club representatives were not available for comment on Tuesday afternoon.

  • SCPS budget balanced – for a few minutes

    The Shelby County Board of Education approved a tentative budget at Thursday's meeting, but it's a budget that is far from what the final version will look like.

    In fact, immediately after passing a budget that balances at $58.2 million – down about 2.3 percent from the 2010-11 working budget but up about 1.5 percent from the 2009-10 actual budget – board members passed two separate measures that would add more than $800,000 in expenses.
