  • Old shoes hold memories of dad

    Diane Malone took this picture in 2003 on the day she wrote the Father's Day poem. Malone said something came over her when she was looking at the shoes. The shoes have had hen and chickens growing in them for 27-years. She wrote this for her dad, J.B. Yates, who died July 28, 1989. Her mother, Myrtle Yates, lives in Shelbyville.

     

    Of days that so slowly have gone by,

    he walked many, many miles.

  • Shelby County Fair kicks off next week

    The parade of carnival rides and food trucks will soon descend upon our quiet town, bringing with it all the excitement and spectacle that embodies the Shelby County Fair.

    The smell of fried foods, the sounds of excited children playing games and the sight of colorful, bright carnival lights illuminating a night sky make the midway one of the most attractive features of the weeklong event.  But with pageants, animal shows, motorsports and numerous exhibits to view, there is so much more to see beyond the gates at the Shelby County Fairgrounds.

    Turner Mayton and Eric Hammersmith are blazing a trail for young entrepreneurs in Shelby County as they have watched their business, The Print Dudes, grow exponentially since it was established last August.

    “We matched the sales from quarters three and four (the only quarters they operated in 2015) from last year in one-and-a-half months this year,” Mayton said.  “We grew three-hundred percent from quarter one of the year until now– quarter two.”

  • 4 to compete for Miss Shelby County Fair pre-teen pageant

    The Miss Shelby County Pre-Teen contest is Saturday at the Shelby County Fairgrounds. Theme wear will begin at 4:30 p.m. and formal wear at 6.

    A contestant must be 8 years old by June 30 and not have reached her 13th birthday by Oct. 31. Five finalists will be chosen, from which a winner and first runner-up will be chosen from the standpoint of beauty, poise and personality.

  • 7 to compete for Miss Shelby County Fair teen pageant

    Shelby County girls will compete Tuesday in the Miss Shelby County Fair Teen pageant. The winner will compete in the Miss Teen Kentucky County Fair pageant. The contestants are judged on beauty, poise and personality.

    Local students named to Cumberlands’ dean list
    In recognition of academic performance, the office of the vice president for academic affairs has announced the students named to the dean's list for the 2016 spring semester. To be eligible, students must attain a minimum cumulative scholastic standing of 3.50 and be in good standing. Students named to the dean's list are as follows:

  • 12 to compete for Miss Shelby County Fair

    12 Shelby County girls will compete Tuesday in the Miss Shelby County Fair pageant.

    A contestant must have reached her 16th birthday by Oct. 31 and shall not have reached her 22nd birthday by Oct. 31 of the year when the contest is held. Contestants will be judged from the standpoint of beauty, poise and personality.
