  • Summertime fun options available in Shelby County

    Lazy summer days, a tall glass of cold lemonade and a picnic in the park sounds pretty good after a cold, rainy spring.

    But that’s just the tip of the iceberg for summer fun in Shelby County.

    First off, there’s the county’s park system and all kinds of activities for kids and adults alike.

    Jeremiah Heath, director of the Family Activity Center at Clear Creek Park, laughed when asked what kinds of programs and activities were available this summer.

  • Luminary ceremony lights up Relay For Life

    Staff Writer

    A luminary celebration to honor those battling cancer will be held as part of the Relay For Life at 10 p.m. Friday at Collins High School.

    Candles will be lit in honor of or in memory of cancer patients and placed around the perimeter of the track.

    This ceremony of light symbolizes the hope and courage of the battle against cancer and it part of a national ceremony.

    The local Relay for Life begins 7 p.m. Friday and continues until 7 a.m. Saturday at Collins High School.

  • Michael Todd Long Charities golf event

    Golfers participated in the 16th annual Michael Long Golf Scramble at the Shelbyville Country Club, generating money for the Shelby Community Charities, which this year is supporting George Cottrell’s battle against ALS. For more information on the event, go to www.ShelbyCharity.com.

  • Engagement: Watts-Potter

    Randy and Janie Watts of Shelbyville announce the engagement of their daughter, Mallory Jane Watts of Shelbyville, to Craig Garrett Potter of Raleigh, N.C. He is the son of Karen Potter of Raleigh and Stephen and Sherry Potter of Fort Mill, S.C.

    Watts is a 2004 graduate of Shelby County High School and a 2009 graduate of the University of Kentucky in music education and library science. Potter is a 2008 graduate of the University of Kentucky in music education.

    The wedding will take place June 25, 2011, at Assumption Greek Orthodox Church in Louisville.

  • Engagement: Miles-Moore

    Jan and Bill Miles of Union, formerly of Shelbyville, announce the engagement and upcoming marriage of their daughter, Holly Anne Miles, to Brandon K. Moore. He is the son of Pam and Kevin Moore of Ceredo, W.Va. 

    Holly Miles is a 1999 graduate of Shelby County High School and a 2003 graduate of Marshall University, where she also obtained her master’s degree in 2005.  She is currently the chief development officer for the June Harless Center for Rural Educational Research and Development at Marshall University.

  • Birth: Spears son

    Adam and Sarah Spears of Simpsonville announce the birth of their first child, a son, on Feb. 8, 2011 at Baptist Hospital Northeast in La Grange. He has been named Matthew Craig Spears.

    Grandparents are Craig and Martha Spears of Taylorsville, Charles L. Stalker of Shelbyville and the late Melisa L. Stalker.

  • Birth: Price daughter

    Brad and Heather Price of Shelbyville announce the birth of their third child, a daughter, on April 9, 2011 at Baptist Hospital East. She has been named Lauren Blair Price.

    She has been named Lauren Blair Price. She was born at 11:26 p.m. weighing 5 pounds 8 ounces and 17 inches long. She has two brothers, Connor, 5, and Parker, 2.

    Grandparents are Donald and Barbara Hamilton of Shelbyville, Larry and Betty Price of Shelbyville. Great-grandparent is George Dennie of Shelbyville

  • Birth: Miner son

    Joshua and Christy Miner of Louisville announce the birth of their first child, a son, born on April 5, 2011 at Baptist East Hospital. He has been named Caleb Joshua Miner. He was born at 11:01 a.m., weighing 6 pounds 1 ounce and was 18 inches long.

    Grandparents are Marty and Rachael Page of Finchville, Dale and Mary Lou Miner of Freeport, III. Great-Grandparents are Jim Conti, Harold and Merilynn Page, Dolores Page and Pauline Butler all of Louisville, and the late Mary Catherine Conti.

    Shelby County Board of Education meets at 7 p.m. Thursday at the central office on Main Street in Shelbyville.
    Board of Adjustments and Appeals meets at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Stratton Center.
