  • Rockets roll with No. 14 Mustangs for a while

    The Shelby County girls’ soccer team more than held its own for the first 68 minutes against 14th-ranked North Oldham on Tuesday evening.

    Unfortunately for the Rockets it was those last 12 minutes that were the difference in the 16th District Tournament first-round match at the Shelby County Athletic Complex. The Mustangs scored thrice in the final dozen minutes to down Shelby County, 3-0.

  • Medley makes the Titans go

    Before this boys’ soccer season began, Collins Coach Scott Cress, who graduated 13 players from his inaugural team, wondered where his second squad’s leadership would come from.

    He quickly found his answer in the form of senior Baker Medley, a midfielder who has become the emotional leader (the ying to the yang of quiet leader Matthew Murphy, a senior defender) of the Titans, who will play host and 13th-ranked Oldham County at noon Saturday in the 16th District Tournament final.

  • Titans deflect their way into regional

    BUCKNER – This time of year, goals aren’t judged on beauty. They are simply counted.

    And Collins boys’ soccer coach Scott Cress couldn’t have been happier about that fact Tuesday night after his Titans knocked off, and knocked out, 20th-ranked South Oldham, 1-0, in the 16th District semifinals at Oldham County.

  • Close loss provides big push for Rockets

    If last Friday night’s 1-point loss at North Bullitt wasn’t a moral victory for the Shelby County football team, it was at least a morale victory.

    One week after losing to their cross-town rival Collins, 39-0, the Rockets pushed the Eagles, the preseason favorite in Class 5A, District 4, to the brink before falling, 14-13.

  • Struggling Waggener next in district slate for Titans

    The Collins football team took a giant step toward winning the Class 4A, District 3 title with last week’s victory over previously unbeaten North Oldham.

    However Titans Coach Jerry Lucas doesn’t want his team to have a misstep tonight against a Waggener team that has won only two games.

  • Titans bounce to title in rubber match

    It was all about the middlemen, or in this case middlewomen, Wednesday night for the Collins volleyball team.

    Led by their A&W middle hitters – senior Ashley Williams and junior Aaliyah Wells – the Titans topped cross-town rival Shelby County, 25-22, 25-17, in the 30th District final, the third meeting between the two this season, at the Rockets’ Mike Casey Gymnasium.

    Williams had five kills and Wells nine a day after she turned 17.

  • Election 2011: Campaigns promise candidates in Shelby

    With voter registration closing this week, the campaign trail will become increasingly busy during the final three and a half weeks leading up to Election Day on Nov. 8.

    And although Shelby County hasn't been a hotspot for gubernatorial candidates incumbent Democrat Steve Beshear, Republican candidate David Williams or even independent Gatewood Galbraith, Beshear and Williams have been her recently, although both have had quiet trips here.

  • Opening of donut shop plugs a hole in Shelby's foodscaope

    The sign has been up for weeks, but the fresh smell of donuts wafting down Midland Trail on Tuesday was the first sure-fire sign that Donut Express had finally fired up the ovens.

    The store completes high-calorie corner in Shelbyville, located in the small shopping center at 1732 Midland Trail by Papa Johns Pizza and Homemade Ice Cream and Pie Kitchen, but there won't be a lot of direct competition.

    Donut Express is open from 5 a.m. to 1 p.m., and with everything made fresh daily, you better get there early.

  • Shelby County Public Schools: Reaction minimal at Simpsonville

    There was a very small turnout Tuesday night for a meeting at Simpsonville Elementary where parents learned more about the impact of the school’s falling into the No Child Left Behind School Improvement Plan, Year 1 category.

    After sending letters to every student's home, explaining that this evaluation would allow students to transfer to Painted Stone or Wright elementaries, if they so chose, the school’s administrators saw just two parents show up for the meeting.
