  • Famous hunter to speak at local church

    More than 400 people are expected to attend an event at Shelby Christian Saturday, March 8 to hear a pioneering outdoorsmen talk about game calling, hunting, and his greatest passion in life - his Christian faith.

    David Hale, who is known for his pioneer efforts in creating games calls and hunting videos, will speak to a near-capacity crowd at an event that includes a meal and door prizes.

    Hale said along with sharing stories from his many years of hunting deer, turkey and elk, he will "hopefully get to share a little gospel" as well.

  • School crusade

    Our Lady of Guadalupe Academy and Corpus Christi High School will host its 7th Annual Crusade for Education 5:30 p.m. until 9 p.m. Saturday, March 8, at Claudia Sanders Dinner House.

    The event, which benefits the children of Our Lady of Guadalupe and Corpus Christi, will offer a reverse raffle, silent auction, live auction and dinner. As part of the live and silent auctions, Our Lady of Guadalupe and Corpus Christi are asking area businesses to donate items or services that would add value to the event.

  • Keeping history alive

    Long interested in Kentucky's historical buildings, Shelbyville's Stephen L. Collins has landed a position on the Historic Properties Advisory Commission.

    Gov. Steve Beshear's office announced the appointment of Collins, 47, as a chair of the commission. He replaces Wayne B. Yeager, who recently resigned. The appointment runs through the remainder of this term, ending Aug. 11, 2008.

  • County fire department lands grant

    The Shelby County Fire Department plans to improve its services with yet another grant it has received from the Department of Homeland Security's Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program.

    The grant will go towards improving communication, emergency response tools and the health of firefighters.

    The funds will purchase reliable firefighter communication throughout the district, which will aid in emergency response.

    "We're updating some radio equipment to meet new federal guidelines," Shelby County Fire Chief Bobby Cowherd said.

  • Fire destroys barn in Mt. Eden

    A barn in Mt. Eden burned to the ground on Wednesday after a spark from a tractor ignited a bale of hay.

    Mt. Eden fire fighters responded to the fire shortly after 11 a.m. and battled the blaze for over an hour and a half. No animals or humans were injured in the fire.

    Steve Rollins, whose father Jim owned the barn, said the blaze was started shortly after he had started his tractor. He said the fire was likely caused from a spark from the engine.

  • Car crashes through grocery store

    At least six people were injured Monday when a Mustang GT drove through the Save-A-Lot grocery store in the Village Plaza shopping center.

    Police believe a medical condition may have caused the driver to lose control of the vehicle. Witnesses said the driver sideswiped several vehicles and mowed down a row of mail boxes before slamming into the concrete wall of the Save-A-Lot at an accelerated speed.

  • Cemetery's past concerns neighbors

    Jim Ellis and his neighbors are concerned about information they turned up in a 20-year-old lawsuit that accused operators of the Louisville Cemetery Association Inc.'s Poplar Level Road cemetery of knowingly desecrating at least 200 graves.

    The association was given a conditional-use permit by the Triple S Board of Adjustments and Appeals last month for 40-acres off Eminence Pike despite neighbors objections. Louisville Cemetery plans to build a cemetery complete with mausoleums on the property.

  • Getting down to Motown

    SCHS Black Achievers celebrated fashion, music and dance at the 4th Annual Fashion Extravaganza Saturday night in the school's theater. They showed their style by dancing, singing and modeling to the hits of The Supremes and Stevie Wonder, among others - with the theme of "Motown Revue."

    Karen Henderson, SCHS counselor and club sponsor, said SCHS Black Achievers is loosely based on Louisville's YMCA Black Achievers. It is open to all high school students and promotes academic success.

  • Spelling Bee

    After six intense rounds of spelling words that would take many a dictionary or spell check to get right, a fifth grader from Wright Elementary school was named the district spelling bee champion on Monday night.

    Amy Dotson won the bee by correctly spelling the word "pretzel."

    After seven of the participants had been eliminated for misspelling words such as anchovy, cadenza and manicure, Dotson went head-to-head against Shannon Harover, an eight-grader from East Middle in the final round.

  • Driver slams into Sav-A-Lot

    At least six people were injured Monday when a Mustang GT drove through the Sav-A-Lot grocery store in the Village Plaza shopping center on Midland Trail.

    Police believe a seizure may have caused the driver to lose control. Witnesses said the driver struck several vehicles and mowed down a row of mail boxes before slamming into the block wall of the Sav-A-Lot at an accelerated speed. For more on this story, read Wednesday's Sentinel-News.
