  • Woman indicted for embezzling from Hysinger

    A Shelby County Grand Jury has indicted a Louisville woman on 22 counts of embezzling amounts greater than $300 at a time from William "Bill" Hysinger Sr., co-founder and partner in the real estate development firm Icon Properties LLC.

    According to a Shelby County Sheriff's report, Hysinger, who is also known for his Hooters restaurant chain, lost a total of $22,806.74 from a series of thefts made from his accounts from May 2007 through November 2007 by accountant/bookkeeper Bobby Robeson, 56.

  • Superintendent candidates submitted

    The local superintendent search committee has selected a handful of applicants for the district's top education position and will give their recommendations to the Shelby County Board of Education this Thursday night.

    For the past two weeks the seven-member search committee has been reviewing the 27 applications that the board received for the position.

    The committee will likely recommended up to five candidates to the board for further review. The recommendations will be made in closed session.

  • Days may be numbered for city alcohol fee

    Shelbyville's "sin tax" may be down for the count.

    The first reading of an ordinance repealing the alcohol sales regulatory license fee took place and was approved at Shelbyville City council's meeting Thursday.

    Two versions of the ordinance were drawn up for the meeting.

    The first draft contained only a single section, which repeals the alcohol fee.

    "Some of council members had advised me that they'd like to have an ordinance just with a repeal without putting the refund in the order," Mayor Tom Hardesty said at the meeting.

  • Clearing snows leads to mailbox damage

    With recent heavy snowfall, transportation workers have put in long hours clearing roads and making them safe.

    While plowing, a number of mailboxes on US 55 were damaged or knocked over by waves of snow being pushed off the road.

    Shelbyville resident Bob Ellis lives along US 55 and said mailboxes being damaged is a problem every winter between Shelbyville and Eminence.

    "Anytime they run the snowplow," Ellis said. "It's happened to me two times this year."

  • Man charged with assaulting wife, police near I-64

    A domestic dispute on the side of I-64 Saturday led to the arrest of a South Carolina man.

    Shelby County Sheriff's deputies arrested Cray Ronald Turman and charged him with third-degree terroristic threatening, alcohol intoxication in a public place, three counts of third-degree criminal mischief, first-degree wanton endangerment, fourth-degree aggravated assault, menacing, and third-degree assault of a police officer.

  • Winters last hurrah?

    Schools released early, people made their way to the grocery to stock up on food as their car radios informed them of the city's fate.

    No, it wasn't Armageddon, but it was the winter's heaviest snow of the year.

    On Friday, the snow fell, and fell, and city crews went to work trying to clear the roads. It was a task they'd continue throughout the weekend.

    According to the National Weather Service, 10 to 12 inches fell around the county, with drifting in some areas raising inches to feet.

    The Simpsonville City Commission will have a special meeting Tuesday, March 11 at 8:15 a.m. to discuss and consider the first reading of an ordinance that would annex land south of I-64.

  • Judicial center plan proceeds

    County officials say eminent domain proceedings could be complete as early as April in the acquisition of the property for the new judicial center.

    Properties located in the downtown Shelbyville block between Fourth, Main and Washington streets for the building site as well as properties in the Second Street and Henry Clay area for parking have been the primary focus of the project's development board acquisition efforts since early last year.

    The state Administrative Office of the Courts (AOC) has already appropriated $18 million in funds for the project.

  • Jail starting to turn profit

    It's not Holiday Inn but the room rate amounts to at least $30 a night.

    With a steady stream of paying visitors so far this year, Shelby County Jailer Bobby Waits is feeling pretty good about his operating budget despite ominous warnings from the state that future funding may be slashed.

    That's in large part because Waits is a planner and has been squirreling away every opportunity that comes his way to make a profit for the jail.

    "We've generated a lot more revenue than we anticipated so far this budget year," Waits said.

  • God's other plans

    "I would've rather been at church," Tabatha Baker said.

    She said she looks forward to Sundays. She is a youth Sunday school teacher and an Upward basketball coach at Highland Baptist Church.

    But on the cold morning of, Dec. 16, 2007, instead of making her routine Sunday trip to church, Baker, of Shelbyville said she was driving down I-64 West on her way to work at Baptist Hospital East.

    Baker said it wasn't her day to work, but she called in and was told she was needed.
