  • New program helping kids learn, grow

    Keeping kids off the street and occupied in a controlled environment is no easy task.

    And getting them off the street and getting them to learn during the summer is something every community struggles with.

    But Norris Beckley has had some success helping area kids this summer, and he's hoping to build off of it.

  • Simpsonville filling 2 openings in parks

    The Simpsonville Parks Department is looking for a couple of part-time employees and is  moving quickly to hire them.

     

    Commissioner Cary Vowels said at the city commission’s meeting on Tuesday that he had interviewed candidates for parks director and an administrative assistant, both part-time jobs.

     

    Denise Miller, the parks director for the past three-plus years, has given notice of her intention to leave as parks director sometime after the Simpsonville Fall Festival, which is Sept. 11.

    Council meeting canceled Shelbyville City Council has scheduled its regularly scheduled meeting for Thursday night. The next scheduled session would be Aug. 19. In the meantime the council will conduct a workshop at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday to discuss Shelbyville Downtown Districts.

  • EARLIER: Bigger Jubilee sets up later horse show

    Though the Shelbyville Horse Show gets a later start this year, plenty will be happening at the end of July, with the Horse Show Jubilee getting under way July 29.

    The Jubilee started 14 years ago as a way to get people into downtown Shelbyville before the horse show, which in its 21st year runs Aug. 4-7.

  • House purchase pushes Simpsonville over budget

    The City of Simpsonville completed its 2009-10 fiscal year with a budget shortfall of just more than $77,000, which city commissioners will absorb through state-required budget amendments.

    Commissioners reviewed those figures during a brief presentation from Finance Commissioner Cary Vowels during their regular meeting Wednesday morning.

    Torrey Smith said when he noticed one of his credit cards was missing a couple of weeks ago, , he wasn't too worried

    "I had no idea where it was, and I was about to cancel it, but wanted to buy an airline ticket first," he said. "So, I thought, well I'll wait."
