About 16 years ago Yolanda Bradford decided to get out on her own.
After working as an accountant for the state for several years, she said she was ready to open her own business.
"I was the first, and probably only, black accountant in Shelby County," she said.
But as an African-American business owner, Bradford, the owner of YLB Accounting & Consulting Services, is starting to get some company.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the presence of African-American-owned businesses is on the rise.
