  • Shelby woman in fair condition after head-on collision

    One person remains hospitalized in fair condition following a 2-vehicle, head-on collision Monday afternoon that sent both drivers and two passengers to the hospital.

    Penny Conner, a passenger in a vehicle driven by her husband, remains at the University of Louisville Medical Center. All others involved were treated and released following the collision at the intersection of Midland Trail and Old Finchville Road.

  • Relay for Life teams grow in Shelby County

    Much like this year’s summer blockbusters, the 2013 Relay for Life of Shelby County is shaping up to be bigger and better than the year before with its theme of “Lights, Camera, Cure.”

    The event featuring food, a parade and movie-themed costume contest will begin at noon on Saturday at Shelby County High School.

    As of Tuesday, 35 teams have registered for this year’s event and in the process have raised more than $31,000 and counting for the American Cancer Society.

  • Finchville scout troop to shut down

    In the wake of Boy Scouts of America’s decision to accept openly gay scouts, at least one Shelby County troop will be shut down.

    Bill Pacey, who has been a leader with scouting for 17 years and since 2000 has been the scoutmaster off Troop 137 in Finchville, said he will shut down the troop as of Dec. 31, the day before the BSA’s decision goes into affect.

  • Crusade totals up in Shelby, statewide

    Collection totals for this year’s WHAS Crusade for Children increased significantly from last year, both statewide and at the local level.

    The telethon’s $6 million goal was exceeded, bringing in $6,001,342 over last year’s $5,189,348, with Shelby County totaling $147,588, compared to $138,560 in 2012.

  • Health fair offers men key, free tests

    Two survivors of prostate cancer are urging men all around the community to do all they all can not to fall victim to the disease.

    And in this case, Tony Carriss and Wade Hembree said, the prevention is simple: Just come out to the 13th annual Men’s Health Fair being held at Jewish Hospital Shelbyville from 8 a.m. to noon on  Saturday morning.

  • Saying good-bye to Duanne Puckett

    A crowd of a couple of hundred people came to a retirement reception Tuesday afternoon at Science Hill Inn to honor Duanne Puckett, who is retiring as spokesperson for Shelby County Public Schools. The reception for Puckett, also a former editor of The Sentinel-News, included brief speeches by several people, including Superintendent James Neihof and former superintendent Leon Mooneyhan, who related memories of working with Puckett.

  • Outlet mall: It’s official: The mall will rise

    Despite a bevy of moved dirt, rock and even a 6.5-acre lake, Horizon Group Properties along with representatives of the city of Simpsonville made things official Tuesday with a ceremonial groundbreaking at the site of Outlet Shoppes at Louisville.

    After two years of speculation and development work, this retail center – now said to be 374,300 square feet of space – is under way on a 50-acre parcel at Exit 38 of Interstate I-64, just south of the intersection of Buck Creek and Veechdale roads.

  • Shelby County schools name King, Peake to key posts

    Shelby County Public Schools named two near leaders for the coming school year.

    Brenda King, since 2009 the county’s director of special education, will be the principal of the new Northside Early Childhood Center that  is scheduled to open in January 2014.

    And Ayanna Peake, a native of Louisville with an extensive background in psychology, will served as the Reading and Math Proficiency Coordinator (affectionately known as RAMP).

    State will bump gas tax again on July 1

    Kentucky state law will kick in on July 1 and automatically raise the state's gas tax 2.4 cents a gallon. The law has raised the state's gas tax in nine of the last 10 years.

    The state will collect an additional $72 million in tax revenue as Kentucky's tax on a gallon of gasoline goes to 32.3 cents, almost twice the gas tax we were paying a decade ago.

    The law partly ties the gas tax rate to the average wholesale price of gasoline.

  • Shelby's Brown: Open berth is a 'dream come true'

    Brandon Brown is U.S. Open-bound.

    Brown, a professional golfer from Shelbyville, earned a place in next week’s Open – one of the sport’s four major championships – by finishing second Monday in a United States Golf Association Sectional Qualifying event in Springfield, Ohio.

    Brown shot 5-under-par for 36 holes at Springfield Country Club to garner a spot in the 156-player field that will converge on Merion Golf Club in Ardmore, Pa., on June 13-16.
