  • Schools budget balanced for now

    The Shelby County School Board approved Thursday a balanced budget for the 2010-2011 school year, but  that’s only the first step in a long and involved process of funding a new season of education in Shelby County.

    Facing grim financial times in the state and opening a new high school, the school district has worked through a massive process of belt-tightening, redistributing and planning that appears to have it positioned well for the coming year.

  • District hopes TaG program can grow

    During its meeting Thursday, the Shelby County Board of Education heard a report on the Talented and Gifted (TaG) program from Kerry Fannin and Dave Weedman.

    The board members said they were impressed with the work done by the six teachers, but they said they’d like to see the program continue to grow.

  • House budget plan trims 2 school days

    A state budget proposed last week by House leaders gives the state a starting point, but legislators say there is still a long way to go.

    The proposal is about $405 million short of a balanced budget in the second year, nearly double the first projections last week. It would provide a balanced budget for the 2010-2011 fiscal year, which begins July 1.

  • New core standards are landmark steps

    Kentucky started Wednesday what leaders are saying will be a sweeping national reform in education.

    The Kentucky Board of Education, the Council on Postsecondary Education and the Education Professional Standards Board signed a resolution that agreed to implement the Common Core State Standards in English/language arts and math, ensuring that Kentucky will integrate the standards into the state’s public education system.

  • State to honor National Board Certified teachers

    Each year during the legislative session, the state honors teachers who have achieved National Board Certification, and this year Gov. Steve Beshear has taken it one step further.

    Beshear signed a proclamation declaring Tuesday as Kentucky National Board Teacher Day.

  • School board learns about Southside’s Tiger Trails, ROTC programs

    Although Shelby County Public Schools were out on Thursday, the school board was still in session that night.

    The board gathered at Southside Elementary School for its biweekly meeting and heard presentations about how that school is meeting the needs of its students.

    Kathy Woods, the ESL teacher, gave a presentation on a trip her students took to the Newport Aquarium in Northern Kentucky.

    The field trip was a “background educational experience” for the students, she said.

  • Painted Stone brothers hit the stage for 'Nutcracker in a Nutshell'

    Painted Stone Elementary principal Michelle Shipley says students Jake and Ryan Waford are stars in the classroom and on stage.

    "They are awesome. They are terrific role models. They do everything you ask them to do. They’re always ‘yes, ma'am. no, ma"am.’ You'd want to have a whole class of them,” she said.

  • A little bit of Shelby in Macy's

    Devoted cheerleaders Macy Mize and Megan Glass performed in front of a few hundred fans at last week's East Middle-West Middle basketball game.

    Thursday they'll perform in front of millions.

    That's because these two eighth-graders at WMS will participate in the country's largest Thanksgiving parade, taking the streets of New York to perform for the millions who line them to watch the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade in person and the tens of millions viewing on TV.

  • Hargadon named Friend of Education

    When Shelby County Public Schools needs help from the community, the board knows where to turn -- to Pat Hargadon.

    “He never hesitates to help if we ask for something that directly benefits the children,” Shelby County Public Schools Community Relations Coordinator Duanne Puckett said.

    For all his activity and his quick response to help, Hargadon received the Friend of Education Award from the Kentucky School Boards Association Saturday at the group’s annual conference at the Galt House in Louisville.
