  • Commendation

    Sheba Tate, a senior at the Shelby County Education Center @ Cropper, was commended by the school board for turning in the $1,000 she found in the parking lot of a grocery store. In the presence her classmates, she was presented with a certificate on behalf of the board and Superintendent James Neihof, along with a copy of Twas The Night Before Christmas that was inscribed to her baby as a reminder of the honest act her mother performed.

  • Heads-on learning

    Clear Creek Elementary students and dads enjoyed a fun night at "Readin' & Writin' with the Kentucky Department of Fish & Wildlife. The students and some dads composed their own "Kentucky Outdoor Story" and shared their stories with others in attendance.  The students enjoyed looking at native animal artifacts and enjoyed trying them on for size, like Thomas Hay.

  • Dance competition

    The 8th, 9th, and 10th Regional Dance Tournament was held at Collins High School on Jan. 29. The Shelby County High School dance team placed second in the category of hip hop. Spencer County won, beating out the Rockets by four points. The Dance Rockets received a bid to compete in the state dance team competition, which will be held on Feb. 26 at the Frankfort Convention Center.

  • SCHS, Collins students shine at drama festival

    Shelby County High School and Martha Layne Collins High School drama students were in the spotlight in the recent newsletter from the Kentucky Department of Education.

    Students from both schools attended the Kentucky Theatre Festival, which is the state affiliate of American Association of Theatre in Education (AATE), in Danville in November. The High School One Act Play Festival this year brought 16 schools to Centre College.

  • PJ party at Simpsonville

    Families were invited to Simpsonville Elementary on the evening of Jan. 27 for "Pajama Party Reading Night." Ninety people attended and were served milk and cookies and heard story time while wearing their pajamas. Stories were read by Simpsonville library media specialist Karen Falkenstine and her husband, Jim.

  • Campus: Raisor on dean's list

    Marissa Raisor was named to the dean's list at Northern Kentucky University. This honor is given only to full-time students with superior academic performance. She is the daughter of Kelly Raisor and Victoria Raisor.

  • SCHS captures academic district

    The split to two high schools hasn’t impaired the ability of Shelby County’s academic teams.

    Shelby County High School won the Governor’s Cup district competition on Jan. 29 at Henry County High School with two first-place team finishes and four individual top finishes, and Collins added another individual first-place finish.

  • Donuts with Dad

    Fathers came to Simpsonville Elementary to have breakfast with their children during "Donuts with Dad."  The fathers and students had donuts, coffee and juice along with a presentation from Coleda Tackett of KYPIRC regarding "Father Involvement In Children's Education." The event was sponsored by the Simpsonville Family Resource Center and Title 1.

    Jacinta Newsome, a teacher at Shelby County High School, has produced a video to reflect on the history of the 50-year-old school and to motivate for the next generation of learners and athletes. There are still-life photos from the 1961 Rocket yearbook as well as movie clips of current staff members in action.
