  • Highway deaths nearly doubled in Shelby in 2009

    Nearly twice as many people died on Shelby County roads in 2009. There were nine deaths in Shelby, up from five in 2008, which is in stark contrast to statewide numbers released by the Transportation Cabinet on Tuesday. Those figures indicate 44 fewer people were killed in Kentucky last year, the fifth consecutive year of decline. Preliminary figures indicate 782 people lost their lives, down from 826.

  • Shelby County Grand Jury Indictments: Jan. 30, 2010

    Charles Richmond III of 1005 High Street in Shelbyville was indicted for first-degree trafficking in a controlled substance (cocaine), possession of drug paraphernalia and possession of marijuana.

    Theresa Parrish, aka Theresa Richmond of 1005 High Street in Shelbyville was indicted for first-degree trafficking in a controlled substance (cocaine), possession of drug paraphernalia and possession of marijuana.

    Curtis E. Ellis of 3102 Sunnyside Road in Smithfield was indicted for second-degree robbery, complicity.

    Criminal Trespass

    Joseph Shearer, 21, of 626 Hollow Creek Road in Lexington was arrested Jan. 31 on the 500th block of Washington Street and charged with second-degree criminal trespass, third-degree unlawful trespass with a minor and second-degree fleeing and evading on police on foot.

  • Shelby County Sheriff Reports: Jan. 27, 2010

    Robert S. Newton Jr., 29, of 3718 Mareli Court in Shelbyville was arrested Jan. 3 at the detention center and charged with first-degree assault on a fellow inmate.

    Laura Y. Elfast, 45, of 334 Ardmore Lane in Shelbyville, was arrested Jan. 11 at 500 Taylorsville Road and charged with shoplifting.

    Charles W. Gray, 24, of 3188 Frankfort Road in Shelbyville was arrested Jan. 11 on Frankfort Road and charged with third-degree criminal trespass.

  • Crime Stoppers seek info on stolen trailer

    On Thursday, Jan. 7, a small box trailer was stolen from a truck parked at Ramada Inn on Breighton Circle.

    The theft occurred at about 11:15 p.m., when someone unhitched the trailer from the owner's truck and stole it, along with its contents.

    Video surveillance photos show the suspect's pickup truck arrive at the hotel without a trailer, then leave a minute later pulling the victim's trailer.

    The suspect's pickup truck is described as a dark green or blue regular cab pickup truck with no tail gate.

  • Gentry promoted to sergeant

    Shelbyville Police Officer Bruce Gentry has been promoted to sergeant and was sworn in Wednesday at the police station by Judge Donna Dutton.

    Mayor Tom Hardesty, who was present at the ceremony, said Gentry's promotion was well-deserved.

    "He's a good police officer and an asset to the community," he said.

    Gentry, a Shelbyville native, has been with the department for nearly seven years. Before that, he was a police officer in New Orleans, from 1999 to 2003.

    He has a daughter, Kaycie Gentry, and a finance, Myrranda Baker.
