  • Bruner's trial scheduled for March 11

    The next time that Mark Bruner, charged with the brutal beating of a woman left by the side of the road, appears in court it will be for his jury trial, scheduled for March 11.
    Bruner, 38, of Taylorsville was indicted by a Shelby County Grand Jury on charges of first-degree assault and tampering with physical evidence against him in connection with the beating of Denisse Escareno on Nov. 5, 2011.
    Bruner was arrested 10 days after Escareno, 24, was found beaten, stabbed and barely alive by passersby on the side of Mount Eden Road about 2 miles south of Interstate 64.

  • Barking dog saves Shelby County family from fire

    The Travis family awoke just past midnight Friday to billowing smoke and flames that were hungrily devouring their small home near Cropper.

    But thanks to the vigilance of a small family pet they had time to escape with their lives.

    “Emmie, she woke us up,” said Tina Travis, whose two daughters and other family members were also asleep when the fire broke out.

    Jessica Roberts had been asleep for a couple of hours, Bagdad Fire Chief Rusty Newton said, when she was awakened by a dog barking.

  • Bruner closer to trial in beating case

    Mark Bruner, charged with the brutal beating of a woman left by the side of the road, was given a new court date Monday for still another status hearing as he nears his jury trial date of March 11.

    Shackled and wearing his orange jailhouse-issued jumpsuit, Bruner glowered at onlookers as he entered Shelby County Circuit Court and stood stoically before Judge Charles Hickman as his court appointed attorney, Melanie Lowe-Stratton, and Assistant Commonwealth Attorney Melanie Carroll reviewed the case.

  • Teen injured in shooting New Year’s Eve

    A teen is recovering from a gunshot wound he received New Year’s Eve, police say.

    Shelbyville Police Chief Danny Goodwin said that on New Year’s Eve, police were dispatched to 116 Berea St. at 4:42 p.m. after receiving a call about a possible shooting.

    “We had a male juvenile who was shot and was transported to the University of Louisville Hospital, and it is currently under investigation,” he said. “That’s all I can say at this time.”

  • Woman in Henry animal abuse case sues county

    Terri Smith, the Henry County woman who was charged with animal hoarding and operating a puppy mill, now has filed two suits against the county and its animal control officer for how her case was handled.

  • Sammy Mobley pleads not guilty in rundown case

    TAYLORSVILLE – A Waddy man charged with attempting to run over his uncle’s girlfriend with a motorcycle was arraigned in Spencer Circuit Court on Thursday morning.

    Waddy resident Sammy F. Mobley, 36, faces a charge of first-degree wanton endangerment in connection with a March 16 incident in which Benjamin W. Mobley, 58, of Murphy Lane, allegedly attempted to shoot at and pistol-whip his girlfriend, who is from Mount Eden.

  • Tandem trailer crash backs up I-64 in Shelby County for hours

    One lane of westbound Interstate 64 near Simpsonville was closed for nearly 11 hours Thursday after tractor-trailer pulling loaded tandem trailers crashed through a guardrail and nearly upside.

    The driver, whose name had not been released, escaped uninjured when his rig left the roadway at Mild Marker 29, in the construction zone at the Bullskin Creek bridge east of Simpsonville, sometime around 4 a.m.

    Raymond Lott of Shelby County was taken to UofL hospital after running his SUV through this house at 2041 Frankfort Road Friday afternoon.
