  • Crime Stoppers seeks info with several thefts from cars

    Last week saw a rash of thefts from cars, virtually in all areas of town, police say.

    Shelbyville Police Officer Istvan Kovacs said that all except one car was unlocked, and he is not certain about that one.

    On May 15, between 4-11 p.m. someone took a Garmon GPS from a car in the 900 block of Magnolia Avenue. The GPS was valued at more than $100.

    Also on that date, between midnight and 8 a.m. someone took a stereo valued at $150 from an unlocked car at Lynn Acres.

    Regulo Rodriguez, first-offense DUI, operating on suspended/revoked operator's license and first-offense failure of owner to maintain required insurance/security -- plead guilty -- 30-day sentence, serve two days, balance conditionally discharged for two years, operator's license suspended for 120 days and $1328 fine and costs.

  • Officer uses Taser to fight man with hammer

    A Shelbyville man received a shock when police used a Taser to subdue him after he attacked an officer with a hammer, police say.

    Guthrie Ford, 63, of 800 Main Street in Shelbyville was arrested Sunday and slapped with numerous charges all stemming from the alleged hammer attack.

    The report says the incident began when Kevin Redmond looked out a window at his residence on 9th Street and saw Ford sitting in his car. Redmond said he went to his car and asked Ford to get out, but that Ford threatened him with a hammer.

    Drunken Driving/Traffic-Related

    Hector O. Ganzalez, 24, of Louisville was arrested May 17 on Interstate 64 at Mile Marker 31 and charged with DUI first offense, no operator’s license and speeding.

    Jessie T. Scrogam Jr., 26, of Bagdad was arrested May 15 on Jonathan Circle and charged with DUI, third offense in five years.

    Terri M. Norton, 39, of Shelbyville was arrested May 13 on Brooks Industrial Road and charged with DUI under aggravating circumstances.

  • State police event to promote motorcycle safety

    Kentucky State Police will kickoff Motorcycle Safety Awareness Day on Thursday in Frankfort.

    This event, which is in its second year, will be an all-day affair that includes include vendor displays, a news conference, a safety seminar and the "Cruise for Awareness" ride.

    The riders will be escorted by KSP and the Lexington Police Department, with more than 200 motorcycles traveling through Frankfort making a swing around the State Capitol building.

  • Shelbyville Police Reports May 15, 2009

     Driving under the influence

    Andres Ramirez-Vazquez, 26, of Shelbyville, was arrested May 9 on Main Street at the Clear Creek Bridge and charged with DUI first offense under aggravating circumstances, no operator’s license and possession of marijuana.

    Clark M. Smith 52, of Louisville, was arrested May 9 on I-64 East at the 32 mile and marker and charged with DUI.

  • Crime Stoppers seeks info on store theft

    Shelby County Crime Stoppers is seeking information on an unusual theft that happened in mid-April.Shelbyville Police officer Istvan Kovacs reported that on April 15 three women, accompanied by a small child, entered The Family Dollar Store at 174  Mount Eden Road in Shelbyville shortly after noon.

    The women shopped until they had filled a shopping cart full of merchandise.

  • Man buys car with stolen check

    A Shelbyville man is in custody after he purchased a car with a stolen check,  police said.

    James M. Hinkle, 22, of High Street was arrested and charged with felony theft (over $300) and first-degree criminal possession of a forged instrument, which was a stolen check.

    The police report says that on March 31 Hinkle purchased a 2005 Chevy Impala at Cars of Shelbyville, located on Midland Trail.

    The report says that Hinkle later admitted to Shelbyville Police Officer Susan Marcum that he knew the check was stolen when he used it to buy the car.

    James E. Justice, 45, of Cincinnati was arrested Saturday on LaGrange Road and charged with DUI, first offense, operating on a suspended or revoked operator's license, leaving the scene of an accident and first-degree wanton endangerment.

    Dana M. Miller, 26, of Bagdad was arrested Wednesday on College Street and charged with DUI, second offense, operating on a suspended operator's license, having an open alcoholic beverage container in a vehicle and failure to surrender a revoked operator's license.

  • Fugitive indicted for murder

    A local man police have been seeking for two months in the death of a local teenager has been indicted for murder.

    Salomon Caballero Gomez, 22, was indicted Wednesday by the Shelby County Grand Jury in the death of Joel Diego Mena, 17.

    Gomez is accused in the shooting death of Mena, who was shot in the street at the intersection of 9th and College streets on Feb. 18.

    Mena was transported to Jewish Hospital Shelbyville, where he was pronounced dead.
