  • Scammers targeting newspaper advertisers

    Scam artists have found yet another new way to try to separate people from their money, and this one involves classified ads.

    At least four newspapers around Kentucky, including The Sentinel-News, are being used by scammers who are calling phone numbers listed in classified ads and soliciting payments and important personal information.

    Reanna Smith, communications director at the Better Business Bureau in Louisville, said the calls started Tuesday afternoon.

  • Charges added for man jailed for shooting, eluding police

    A Shelbyville man already jailed for having fired shots at a sheriff's deputy was indicted July 8 on charges filed previous to the alleged shooting.

    Jesse Andrew Loving, 19, of 7609 Hempridge Road was inducted on charges of first-degree criminal mischief, fourth-degree assault (domestic), violation of a protective order, and third-degree terroristic threatening.

    Court records state that Loving is charged March 24 with intentionally damaging his live-in girlfriend's car and assaulting her.

  • Suspect in rash of burglaries indicted

    A man who police believe is responsible for numerous break-ins at businesses in Shelby and surrounding counties has been indicted by a Shelby County Grand Jury on two counts of third-degree burglary and for being a persistent felony offender.

    Robert Eugene Weathers, 40, of Springfield was arrested in June and charged with two counts of third-degree burglary after officers apprehended him in the vicinity of Big O Tires, which had just been broken into. After being arrested, he confessed to burglarizing Big O Tires as well as Goodyear on June 15, police said.

  • Minister charged with sodomy out on bail

     

    A minister of a Shelbyville church who has been jailed for sodomy and sexual abuse of a juvenile is out on bail.

    James H. Bell, 47, pastor of Refuge Temple Church of God in Christ, bonded out of jail on Monday, after his bond was reduced from $50,000 to $25,000 cash at his pretrial hearing.

    Bell had confessed to having unprotected sex with a 15-year-old while knowing that he was HIV positive, according to court records.

  • Shelby County Sheriff Reports Aug. 5, 2009

    Jerrad S. Murphy, 20, of 4905 Elmburg Road in Bagdad was arrested July 13 on Taylorsville Road and charged with failure to signal, operating on a suspended operator's license, possession of an open alcoholic beverage container, trafficking in marijuana, less than 8 oz., first offense and no insurance, first offense.

    Jesus Rarahena Marquez, 39, of 209 A Street in Shelbyville was arrested July 14 on Marshall Court and charged with no operator’s license and no insurance.

  • Info needed on burglary

    Crime Stoppers is seeking information about a burglary that happened sometime last week.

    The crime happened in the 100 block of 8th Street while the resident was away on a trip. The resident was gone from July 18 until July 23, when he/she returned at 10:30 p.m. to find the front door damaged and not secured.

    Several items were taken from the home, including a large quantity of DVDs, CDs, all of which were marked with the victim's name in permanent marker.

  • Shelby County Grand Jury Indictments July 27, 2009

    Billy Bryant of 488 Cedarmore Road in Bagdad was indicted for third-degree sodomy.

    Bruce A. Boerner of 1741 Robin in Shelbyville was indicted for third-degree assault, resisting arrest, fleeing or evading police second-degree, fourth-degree assault, second-degree disorderly conduct, and alcohol intoxication in a public place.

    Mathew J. Hornback of 5824 Vigo Road in Bagdad was indicted for first-degree bail jumping.

    Larry E. Farmer of 3361 LaGrange Road in Smithfield was indicted for second-degree burglary.

    Dylan E. Cortese, 21, of 924 Henry Clay Ave. No. 2 in Shelbyville was arrested Tuesday on Henry Clay Street and charged with first-degree robbery and theft by unlawful taking.

    Danny James Mills, 25, of 634 10th Street in Shelbyville was arrested Monday  at U.S. 60 and Meadow Ridge Road and charged with second-degree burglary and first-degree unlawful access to a computer.

  • Crime Stoppers seeks info on theft from car

    Crime Stoppers is asking for the public's help in getting information about a theft from a car that happened in the 7000 block of Charleston Way.

    Between 10:30 p.m. Sunday night and 3 p.m. on Monday afternoon, someone took cash, jewelry, CDs and the ashtray from an unlocked car on that street.

    Leshaun D. Evans of 1019 Henry Clay Street in Shelbyville was arrested Saturday on Mack Walters Road and charged with first-degree fleeing or evading police in a motor vehicle, first-degree wanton endangerment, operating on a suspended or revoked operator's license and possession of marijuana.
