  • Homearama 2008 - Local man's home on display

    When Al Bennett builds a house, he wants the owners and their guests to feel at home the minute they walk in the door.

    Bennett, of Simpsonville, said creating a welcoming atmosphere is done by adding extra details and making sure that everything in the house is of the highest quality.

    "That's what buyers are looking for," he said. "So I try to give it to them."

    Because of Bennett's reputation as an innovative builder, he was asked to design and construct a house for this year's much-anticipated Homearama.

  • Johnson Controls cuts workforce in half - 114 are out of work

    When Steve Lear left his job at Johnson Controls last Thursday, his supervisors told him that his job would be there for him after the company came back from a month-long hiatus.

    But on Monday, Lear and 113 other employees found out that before they walked out the door on Thursday, their pink slips were already in the mail.

    "That was the notice I got for giving Johnson Controls 10 years of hard work," he said. "They don't care about no one but themselves."

  • Cashing in on the Ryder's Cup

    Though the Ryder Cup is still two months away, local businesses are already experiencing the benefits of having a world-class golf tournament take place just miles down the road.

    The event, which will take place September 16 to 21 at Valhalla Golf Club, will draw spectators from around the world to watch the best European and U.S. golfers square off on the greens.

    In total, the event is expected to bring over $120 million dollars into the area.

    Several local hotels have already booked up for the event.

  • Shelbyville Home Expo is July 12

    Despite the doom and gloom about gas prices and the economy in general, it's a good time to buy a home.

    That's the message to visitors of Shelbyville's first Home Expo planned for Saturday, July 12 in Floral Hall at the Shelby County Fairgrounds. The event will run from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The expo is free and participants will be eligible for giveaways, including a big screen TV and free closing costs.

  • Bistro revived: Restaurant under new ownership

    When Maggie Herrick was 9 years old, her favorite place to eat in Shelbyville was Bistro 535. The restaurant's downtown location, fantastic food, and local flare gave the establishment an indelible charm that made a lasting impression on the young girl.

    And now, with a college education and nine years of experience in the restaurant industry behind her, Herrick has returned to the community to run the Bistro.

    Herrick, who will run the Bistro with her boyfriend, Matty Beal, said owning the restaurant is a dream come true.

  • Spanish-speaking doctor opens practice

    Dr. Mario Rios has opened a new family practice at 140 Stonecrest Drive.

    The office is located behind O'Reilly Auto Parts off U.S. 60.

    Dr. Rios, who lives in Louisville with his wife, Ruth, is a native of Columbia and a graduate of the University of Buenos Aires in Argentina. He has been living in the United States for 40 years.

    He accepts patients 9-years-old and up. No appointment is necessary; patients are seen on a first-come, first-serve basis. He and his staff speaks fluent Spanish.

  • New Business: Hinkle's Glass and Windows

    Kevin Hinkle wouldn't walk over broken glass for his customers, but he will do just about anything else, he says.

    "Pretty much anything that involves glass, I can do," he said.

    Glass is his business, and he opened his own shop, Hinkle's Glass and Windows, on June 1 at 201 8th St.

    Hinkle, who lives in Shelbyville with his wife, Kelly, said he has more than 15 years experience in the glass business, acquired from working with his father-in-law, Bennie Dunn, of Lexington.

  • Foreclosures: 'Needlessly on the rise'

    Yolanda Bradford knows painfully too well the look on homeowners' faces when they are facing foreclosure.

    Bradford, a non-profit financial consultant, said people who come into her office with a stack of late mortgage payments often don't have any hope of saving their home.

    "They think there is no way to save their home, so many just walk away and let their house fall into foreclosure," she said.

    Bradford has seen the number of homeowners who walk away without first pursuing all of their options steadily increase in Shelby County.

  • 'Bankrupt' Goody's to stay open here

    Velda Imel is glad that the Goody's location in Shelbyville is not one of the close to 70 stores in the chain was tapped to be shut down. Imel, of Cropper, said she has shopped at the store on Midland Trail for years because of its selection and low prices.

    "It's too bad for those other stores," Imel said.
