  • Landmark suspends sale

    Landmark Media Enterprises, the parent company of The Sentinel News, announced today that it is “largely suspending the process to sell its remaining business.”

    In a press release, Frank Batten Jr., Landmark’s Chairman and CEO, said the sale has been suspended because the current credit crisis has “made it virtually impossible for companies to obtain bank commitments to help finance acquisitions.”

    A grand opening will be held this Sunday for the Birch House in Clear Creek Park.

    This two-story building is the former home of Dr. A.L. Birch and is now available use of the public.

    Clay Cottongim, the park’s director, said the newly renovated historic building is “perfect for wedding receptions, adult's birthday parties, Christmas gatherings and other holiday functions.”

  • Teacher Jennings named businesswoman of the year

    The Business and Professional Women's organization of Shelbyville has named a local educator as their Woman of the Year.

    The local BPW has also recently recognized three other women for their achievements in the business world.

    Ernestine Jennings, who teaches English in Shelby County Public Schools, received the woman of the year award earlier this month for her years of service in the public school system.

    Along with her work in the school system, Jennings is also a co-adviser for the National Honor Society and coordinator of Adopt-a-Child.

  • Shelby Artists on Main anniversary event to benefit CASA

    Shelby Artists on Main will celebrate its fifth anniversary with a fund-raising event Thursday night to help troubled children.

    From 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. the gallery, located at 617 Main St. in Shelbyville, will donate a portion of all art sales to the Court Appointed Special Advocates for Children (CASA), which aids abused or neglected children in Shelby and Spencer counties.

    CASA volunteers help children who have been ordered to get help by a family court judge, actively participating in the children’s lives.

  • Dealers cope with the credit crunch - Some potential buyers can't get loans, so cars remain on lots

    In today's market, buying a car can be a dream or a nightmare.

    A sustained drop in auto sales for the last 11 months has caused dealerships to reduce prices drastically - some even selling cars close to factory invoice - and offer myriad incentives in order to entice potential buyers.

    Jim Reid, vice president of the O'Brien Ford Dealership in Shelbyville, said the reduced prices and factory rebates that Ford has authorized dealers to offer are some of the best he ever has seen.

    "This is a buyer's market," he said. "Now is the time to buy a automobile."
