  • Firing up the band

    Firefighters from the Shelby County Fire Department “fired up” the Shelby County High School Band with a shower from their hose during a 2-week band camp, which typically operated from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. each sweltering day. The camp attracted 45 musicians in grades 8-12 under the direction of David Roslon. The high expectations for excellence matched the high temperatures so the firefighters gave a cool down before they fired up their instruments for a parent concert. They will enter fall competitions and perform for home football games.

  • On campus: July 29, 2011

    Thomas on Brite Divinity’s dean’s list
    Richard A. Thomas of Shelbyville made the dean’s list with a 3.8 grade-point average during the 2011 spring semester at Brite Divinity School in Fort Worth, Texas. He is a religion major working towards his master’s degree in divinity. Thomas is a 2006 Shelby County High School high distinction honor graduate and the son of Anita Thomas of Shelbyville.

  • Preteen scholarship recognition for Jessica Buckler

    Jessica Buckler, a fifth-grader at Painted Stone Elementary, placed first in the junior talent division at the Preteen Scholarship Recognition Program in Lexington. She was a semifinalist, received the volunteer service award and was first runner-up overall in the junior division. She won trophies for each and $500 towards educational bonds. She is the daughter of John and Patricia Buckler.

  • Art show opens today

    The Youth Art Show, part of the Shelbyville Horse Show Jubilee, opens to the public today in the Hudson Room at the Shelby County Public Library. There are 2D and 3D work from students in Shelby and Henry counties. Included among the 3D work from Shelby County are a Bowl by Cassie Wells, East Middle; a Vase by Julia Kennedy, Shelby County High School; and Wire Sculpture figurine by Dylan Theodorvich, Martha Layne Collins High School. The show is available for viewing during library hours through Aug. 6. The opening reception when prizes are awarded is 5:30 p.m. July 28.

  • Whitney M. Young Job Corps success story

    Terrence Ford is from Colorado Springs and now is serving in the United States Navy. He is also a graduate and alumni of the Whitney M. Young Job Corps Centerin Simpsonville. Due to unfortunate circumstances, Ford was not able to complete his high school diploma. However, he knew that if he wanted to achieve and accomplish his goals in life he had to finish is education.

The 2011-2012 school calendar, school start times and other information about school starting Aug. 17 are also featured in the tabloid produced by the school district.   • Road Warmer

    Miles Megibben put the finishing touches on his vehicle that would be tested on his Road Warmer invention as part of the Talented And Gifted Camp June 27-30 at Heritage Elementary. The fifth-grader at Simpsonville Elementary described how repeated layers of asphalt and metal heating plate “10 miles below the surface” are topped with concrete to “interlock with the earth.” Once “frozen precipitation falls,” and lands on the road, the metal plates are switched on, to “ melts and is absorb [the precipitaiton], thus preventing wrecks.”

  • Manners matters

    Luke and Rachel Dove (in front) work on an introductory project as part of a two-day manners and etiquette class for middle/high school students, coordinated by the Youth Services Center with Shelby County Public Schools. About 15 students participated in the activities that included everything from table etiquette to introductions to when to acknowledge gifts. It concluded with a meal at Claudia Sanders Dinner House.
