  • KFB, conservation districts sponsor essay, art contest

    As another new school year gets underway, the search for Kentucky’s finest young writers and artists also begins.

    Students in grades 1-12 are encouraged to create and submit short essays and artistic entries for the annual Conservation Writing and Art Contests, sponsored by Kentucky Farm Bureau and the Kentucky Association of Conservation Districts.

    This year’s competition – featuring the 70th annual Writing Contest for grades 6-12 and the 40th annual Jim Claypool Conservation Art Contest for grades 1-5 – focuses on soil conservation.

  • SCHS dance team host summer kids’ camp

    The 2014-2015 SCHS Dance Team hosted the annual summer kids' camp for school aged girls from preschool through eighth grade. The girls learned dance skills, technique and two routines that they performed for their friends and family at the dance showcase. This year’s dance team members are (front row, from left) freshmen Janaya Turner and Brooklyn Aldridge, junior Lindsey Hill, seniors Heather Cook, Emilee Colvin and Olivia Matlin, and sophomores Claire Dale and Sammi Armstrong.

  • Shelby County students named Sen. Jeff Green scholars

    Twenty-fivestudents from Shelby County were named Senator Jeff Green Scholars by the Kentucky Higher Education Assistance Authority (KHEAA).

  • Librarian reports successful summer

    “I’m Bored!!” was not heard by at least 2,300 children and teens this summer since they participated in reading and Wacky Wednesday programs at the Shelby County Public Library, where about 24,000 titles of books are available in the children’s department alone.

    According to Youth Services Director Sarahbeth Farabee, 1,785 registered for the Summer Reading Program. Her records showed 1,367 completed the reading requirements – about 77 percent participation, which a book sale representative told her was well above average.
