  • Move to the music

    Bodies were in motion and nutritious snacks were prepared and eaten by moms and students at Clear Creek Elementary during the “Healthy Choices with Mom” event. The Shelby County Extension Office provided nutritious food and recipes to be made and eaten by those attending while Jamie Shiver provided Zumba moves in the gym, where Bryana Hutchinson, Laura Vidourek and Manuel Sangabriel followed the instructions.

    Brianna Ellis received the honor of a 2012 distinguished scholar from Bellarmine University. She is a senior at Shelby County High School and the daughter of Lauri Ellis and William Harvey of Shelbyville.

  • My very own book

    Christian Olvera Lopez, Lynden Ellis and Takyra McElroy hold books received by students in the Shelby County Public Schools Preschool Program, purchased through a grant received from The King’s Daughters and Sons Foundation of Kentucky Inc. Sarahbeth Farabee of the family resource center for preschool received the $1,000 grant to buy books for children to take home as part of a literacy-building program. The current grant will support 3 years’ worth of new books purchases.

    The following students enrolled at the Shelby County Area Technology Center have received the Students of the Month for February are Abigail Siegel, office technology; Joseph Martin, automotive technology; Ricardo Villalobos, machine tool; Kaela Baker, health science; Derrick Mullins, industrial maintenance; and Erin Osten, information technology.

    April 20 – Young Leaders Institute for both high school sophomore members Tourism & Economic Development Day and graduation luncheon

    April 21 – AP study session at Western Hills for both high schools

  • Crosses send a message

    Shelby Prevention Youth Club at Collins High School constructed a Tobacco Industry Graveyard in the grass median leading to the school on Discovery Boulevard. There were 150 white crosses representing the 150 Kentuckians who die weekly from tobacco products. It was in place for Kick Butts Day on March 21 and is part of the action plan for the Students Taking Charge grant.

  • District governor’s cup winners

    Elementary schools in Shelby County were in the spotlight at the Governor’s Cup competition in February. Four competed in the Shelby District meet, one in Oldham and one in Henry. Several students and teams advance to the regionals, hosted last week by Simpsonville Elementary.
