  • Collins dance team in competition

    The Collins dance team participated in the KDCO State dance competition in February. There were 14 teams in their division and they placed third in pom and fourth in hip hop. Team members are Morgan Isenberg and Taylor Scroggin (co-captains), Jill Stella, Andi Gaither, Sydney Rogers, Kylie Truelock, Elizabeth Ordway, Deion Davis and Charla Jamison. Head coach is Hilary Crucet Hayden, and assistant coach is Michelle Isenberg.

  • On campus: David Matthews

    David Baxter Matthews of Shelbyville was named to the dean’s list at Vanderbilt University, where he is a senior in the College of Arts and Science and a member of the Alpha Tau Omega fraternity. To make the dean’s list, a student must make a 3.5 GPA, and David’s GPA was 3.825 the first semester. He has a double major in economics and political science. He is the son of Melissa and Charlie Matthews of Shelbyville.

  • Black History celebration

    Angie Villatoro-Valiente, a fourth-grader in Ty Higgins’ class at Simpsonville Elementary, studied a poster about Garrett Morgan as part of a school-wide Black History Month activity. Morgan invented the traffic signal, and Angie said that without it, there would be lots of wrecks. Featured around his poster were traffic signals created by Kindergarten students.

    Wright Elementary has started grade-level assembly meetings each afternoon to build community among students, like (from left) Josue Rodriguez, Abbigail Didier and Addison Hinkle. Principal Tracey Cline said the pledge of allegiance and school pledge are recited along with points about character education being discussed. There is also a time for sit-and-read, with plans in the future to bring in dance movements.

  • Chinese New year

    Students in Leigh Anne Jessee’s first-grade class at Cornerstone Christian Academy celebrated Chinese New Year with fun activities, creating paper dragons and parading down the halls.
