  • On campus: Aug. 16, 2013

    Brown receives degree from Georgia Tech
    Sarah Brown
    of Finchville has earned a Bachelor of Science degree in aerospace engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta. She was among approximately 2,700 undergraduate and graduate students who received degrees during Georgia Tech's 245th commencement exercises.

  • Troop 164 attends jamboree

    Boy Scout Troop 164 of the First Presbyterian Church attended the National Jamboree in Beckley, W.Va., with 55,000 scouts from all over the United States. Those attending were (from left) Geo Cook, Danny Collum, Abraham, Collum, Bobby Shaver, Robert Sherrod, Joseph Collum, Ben Myatt and Scoutmaster Robert Green.

  • Link Crew mentors

    Link Crew is a mentoring program at both of the high schools in Shelby County that helps eighth-graders transition to the high school environment. Juniors and seniors at Shelby County High School and Collins High School trained for several days before school started to learn skills to help them mentor. The Link Crew members will lead small groups of eighth graders and help them with everything from advice to finding classes.

  • Shelby students complete Governor’s School for the Arts

    More than 200 young artists from every region of the commonwealth – including two from Shelby County – participated this summer in the Governor’s School for the Arts, which took place at Lexington’s Transylvania University June 23-July 13.

    Completing the program from Shelby County were Sierra Brown of Shelby County High School, visual art; and Ryan Ruff of Collins High School, drama.

  • Collins student attends Oak Ridge Military camp

    Madison Maddox, a freshman at Collins High School, attended Oak Ridge Military Academy Leadership Camp for 2 weeks.

    The academy, established in 1852 and located outside of Greensboro, N.C., is the second-oldest military academy in the United States. The camp, which had 27 in the class, has a substantial physical component and all campers participate in military formations, marching drills and leadership training.

  • Thomas graduates from TCU

    Angela P. Thomas graduated cum laude from Texas Christian University in Fort Worth, Texas. She received a Bachelor of Music Education (vocal concentration). She will attend Brite Divinity School in the fall to pursue a Master of Christian Arts and Science.

    Thomas is the daughter of Anita Thomas of Shelbyville and a 2009 Shelby County High School honor graduate.
