  • Art Fest added to Jubilee lineup

    An inaugural Art Fest this year will join the lineup for the annual Shelbyville Horse Show Jubilee, which will be July 25-27.

    The Art Fest we be on the afternoon/evening of July 27 in downtown Shelbyville, along with the downtown car show, the Street Party concert and Chalk Fest for children. Shelby County Community Theatre will offer its summer musical, South Pacific, and The Gallery is open on Main Street.

    Dig into reading at library
    Tom Sparough, known as “Space Painter,” a professional entertainer, will be the guest at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. today at the Shelby County Public Library. The “Dig into reading” special event will have jugging, storytelling and fun. For more information, contact 633-3803.
    Shelby County Fair
    The Shelby County Fair will be Thursday through June 22 at the Shelby County Fairgrounds.

  •  There is just something about music that soothes the soul.

    It’s for that reason Waddy Baptist Church member Kent McKinney has organized the first Waddy Concert Series.

  • Library’s summer reading  program begins Saturday

    The Shelby County Public Library will launch its annual summer reading program with a party on Saturday morning.

    The event, which is from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., will include an ice cream sundaes social, digging for treasure activities for children and the Kentucky Blue bluegrass band.

    Summer reading story hours will start at 10 a.m. Wednesday for ages toddler through 4-year-olds and will continue each Tuesday through July 23.

  • During the local American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life, which begins at noon Saturday at Shelby County High Schools, participants will have the chance to remember loved ones and honor those battling cancer.

    After sunset at each of the Relay For Life events nationwide, luminaries decorated with the names of those who have battled cancer are lit and left glowing throughout the night to remind everyone of the incredible importance of their contributions.

  • Rochelle Arnold Jr. and the former Catherine Chambers were married May 6, 1963, in Shelbyville.

    Her father, the late Rev. James R. Chambers, performed the marriage ceremony. Her mother is the late Genevieve Brown Chambers. She graduated from Lincoln Institute in 1961 and received a Bachelor of Science in computer information systems from Athens State University. She retired from AT&T in Birmingham, Ala., after 33 years of service.

  • Matthew Phoebus, a graduate of Shelby County High School, was promoted to staff sergeant in the U.S. Army.

    SSgt Phoebus is assigned to the 1/32nd Cavalry in the 101st Air Assault Division at Fort Campbell.

    The son of Chris and Brenda Phoebus, he is serving his second tour in Afghanistan.

  • Students from Collins High School collected items for care packages to Pvt. II Joshua Whittle and his platoon in Afghanistan with the National Guards. Whittle graduated from CHS last year. Bekaert Corp. in Shelbyville became involved by being a community partner with the PLTW (Project Lead The Way) engineering program, in which Whittle took three classes. Bakaert will sponsor the senior service project by providing help during the event as well as providing pizzas for the senior celebration afterward.

    Tractor driving contest
    Test driving skills and knowledge of safety procedures on the farm with a tractor driving contest today at Shelby County High School (beside the area tech school). The event, for ages 12 to 19, is sponsored by Shelby County Cooperative Extension offices. For more information, contact Jonathan Scott at 502-321-3245.
